I don’t follow boxing, but I was curious about this reference. Looks like 1974 was an active year for Muhammad Ali, and he bested several well-known opponents in fights like the “Rumble in the Jungle.” The phrase “I was robbed” seems to turn up frequently in boxing, including some recent examples, but I didn’t see one listed for 1974. My guess is that this strip reflected the general trend of big-name fights that year with big purses and sore losers.
So, pro sports is pretty much the same 50 years ago as it is now…
