Those were fun. I could always find a way to get the answer without the math. But when the teacher said we had to “Show our solution” then I was in trouble.
Ah. DIRT problems. Distance Is Rate multiplied by Time. Fairly easy if you know how to do them. Start first by converting the sentence for each person’s travelling into a mathematical expression. The rest depends on what you want to solve for, time, rate or distance. Consult a middle school algebra book for further information. Have fun.
My favorite of that ilk is: “A train is heading toward a crossing from exactly a mile away at exactly 60 miles per hour. A car is heading toward the same crossing from the same distance at the same speed. Does the driver of the car get across?”

East is east, and west is west, and never the twain shall meet. Unless there’s another twain on the same twack.

Under Lola’s solution, there wouldn’t be a problem.

Frazz had an arc on this a week ago. The topic of relevance still remains in both takes on story problems and today’s school kids.

Math was my weakest subject in school. These questions are one of the many reasons why.

Yes. A white marble one!
