Ahhh, summertime was and is the best! Except when mom made me go to vacation bible school. You have a vacation from school only to go to bible school???
I absolutely LOVE the irony (or was it intentional?) that this was today’s post. The press is crazy with September 11th madness and Calvin and Hobbes get what’s important.
Without being nationalistic, the world did change 8 years ago. I find myself watching for the NYC skyline in old movies just to get a glimpse of the twin towers again.
Hobbes always ‘gets it’ and every once in a great while, like in this strip, Calvin catches up with Hobbes and just enjoys the moment. I hope your moments are wonderful today.
Lucky Calvin. The strip is running a little over a month behind real time so he’s got another month or more of vacation. Of course that means he stays in school next spring longer than anyone else…..
musicnut1986,
Your name and posts imply your liking for music. Duh!
I just listened to the versions of “Summertime” by Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Fantasia Barrino, Leona Lewis, and Janis. Numerous other artists have done it over the years since ‘Porgy and Bess’ in 1935. I’m sure almost everyone can find a version he/she likes, unless the person doesn’t like the song, itself.
I hadn’t connected the cartoon with 9/ll until it was brought up. Many of the comments are pertinent in one way or another.
C&H and DT are the only sites who remember today. I viewed some of the other strips and commented on some.
I have to agree with C&H relaxing at the tree timing can only interpet reflection of today that happend 8 years ago.
What a sad day to remember:(.
What a shocking day. As I watched what was happening on TV that morning I thought I would wake up and it would be a nightmare. Never, never, never forget!
MisngNOLA,
Thank you… I just heard it as part of a medley. I also listened to her singing “Send in the Clowns”. I hadn’t heard Cleo Laine for many years. She was born in 1927. I also just heard Leontyne Price and Renee Fleming singing “Summertime”.
Then I moved to Ruthie Henshall singing “Send in the Clowns” and “I Dreamed a Dream”. The internationally acclaimed singer Hayley Westenra from Christchurch, New Zealand was next with “I Dreamed a Dream” and others. By the way, I really like hearing Hayley sing “River of Dreams” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons “Winter”. It’s easy to get carried away with all the great music…
TrapperJohn
Since this strip is in reruns, it is running approximately 2 months beind our calendar. When school’s out next June, Calvin will still be in school.
How is it inappropiatly ironic? My oldest daughter was only one year old on this day so she doesn’t truly understand what really happened on this day eight years ago. Calvin being a young child he would only really reflect on it being a quiet peaceful day but would still understand somewhat the somberness of the day if the schools and parents educate them in History. Just like we wouldn’t understand Vietnam or something of the sort in History unless we had lived through it. So it’s really not that inappropiate if you really think about it. We need to be the ones to stand up and teach our children what this day means in history as we were the ones that were there and we where the ones who lived through the pain in tragedy of that day.
Wow, a lot of comments both on summer vacation and on 9/11. I remember where I was too. It was my first day as a substitute teacher, and I had the challenge right off of watching the events live and then trying to help explain to distraught middle-schoolers what happened and why.
My first thought on this peaceful strip was a memory of Crocodile Dundee asking what day it was. His friend said to himself cheerfully, “Doesn’t know…doesn’t care.”
You seem to appreciate an extremely varied variety of music. I have heard various versions of :Summertime” over the years, but being a fan of the Haight Ashbury sound, I find myself returning to the blues-driven version by Janis and Big Brother.
musicnut1986,
You probably know that “San Francisco” was Scott McKensie’s only hit because he didn’t want to be famous.
“The Mamas and the Papas” might be my second favorite singing group next to “ABBA”.

I like some of the mixed metaphors. Ed Crankshaft is good at it, sometimes.
It’s not mixed metaphor, but “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
If you’re ‘well-bred’, you won’t ‘loaf’ too much. I guess that’s just a ‘run-of-the-mill’ pun.
I’ll take responsibility for that one,
Like George said,
All things must pass
All things must pass away
All things must pass
None of lifes strings can last
So, I must be on my way
And face another day
You know, summer vacation was summer vacation. As a kid, I don’t remember EVER knowing what day it was……until mom said tomorrow was the first day back at school.
This reminds me of sitting under the huge oak tree in our back yard. I used to love being there in the pouring rain because you’d never get wet and I loved the sound the rain made on the leaves. It was the same when the wind would blow fiercely, you could hear it and see the leaves moving, but you never felt it blowing on you. I used to bring a couple blankets out there to eat my lunch on and after cover up and take a nap. I used to sleepwalk when I was a little kid and Mom would find me out back asleep under the great tree.
I like the song, “Summertime”, we sang it in choir but I’d have to say I prefer Will Smith’s Summertime now!
Of course they know what day it is. See third frame, they’re making a minute of silence… or something like that. It’s a kid and his ego trip tiger. Yet, Bill pays a homenage… Simply beautiful!

Yes, Puddleglum2, i can just hear Janis belting out Gershwin’s lyrics to “Summertime”. What a classic blues version of a great broadway tune.
A great song to be intraspective to as we remember the events of 8 years ago.

Though Calvin & Hobbes wasn’t in production during 9/11, I agree that this is is as appropriate as you can get for C&H. A quiet moment to reflect.
