My son had my old toolbox and would help his Dad with projects in the garage and fixing the car. In the house though I only remember him taking things apart to see how they worked. He was good at taking his clock and toys apart and I’d find screws missing from things around the house often. No big story only typical boy stuff!
You don’t get Calvin doing good deeds for nothing - except around Christmas time. My guess is that he is planning to sabotage the pipes to squirt water into his dads face.
Good for Calvin! See a problem, attempt a solution. Too many are afraid to even try. Instead, they naively rely on the opinions of marginally competent “experts”.
My grandfather used to give me old components from cars, appliances, etc. He’d let me take them apart and then have me explain what I thought the thing-a-ma-jig did and how it worked. Then he would have me reassemble the whole thing.
As a result, the only things I can’t fix now are things that aren’t broke. Thank you Gramps for the gift of self-reliance!
There’s more than one ‘drip’ in the cartoon, Hobbes is thinking.
“The age at which children are said to have discretion, is not very accurately ascertained. Under seven years, it seems that no circumstances can be admitted to overthrow the strong presumption of innocence, which is raised by an age so tender.” - from The Free Dictionary
That’s why Macushlalondra is right. Get Dad, ‘Dr. Doom’! Supervision, guidance, and direction are needed here. That’s the ‘prescription’ for success in this situation.
The more mistakes he can make, the more he can learn, is Calvin’s motto.
Some people don’t learn from their mistakes. They just keep making more of them, ad infinitum.
I prefer to learn from other people’s mistakes, if possible.
Yes, gaebie, kill is the key word, one way or the other.
The last I heard it costs around $100 to get a plumber to make an emergency call and that’s before he actually starts his work. Calvin, do you really want to fix the drip?
Family story: when my older brother was 4 or 5, Mom found him on the kitchen counter working away on the toaster.
After that, she gave up trying to keep us from “working” on things around the house. She limited herself to the possible: making sure they were unplugged, the cut-off valves were shut off, and so on.
Unfortunately, the occasional annoying ‘drip’ has showed up again and still doesn’t know unwelcome sewage from his elbow. All he gushes is vituperative abuse.
Calvin has a wrench. The ‘drip’ throws a monkey wrench into the works.
This will be a learning experience……………………………….FOR DAD!. Dad .will. learn to lock up his tools. Dad will also learn how expensive a plumber can be when called on an emergency basis. Dad will also learn how expensive it can be to replace sheetrock and floor tile due to warer damage. Boy, dad is sure going to learn a lot today.
I think it would be funny if for once Calvin did something right and really fixed the faucet - but then again we know that ain’t going to happen so get out the raincoats and umbrellas ‘cause hurricane Calvin is on the way!!
dad is going to blow the top of his head off when he comes home and see that the house is flooding, where the heck is mom,she should know that something is going on,calvin is to quite,he’s up to something.
Anything that can…..WILL….and at the WORST possible moment! (…and to think, there’s this guy in Scotland named McGillicuddy, who thinks Murphy was an optimist!)

I’m sure you’ll fix it well Calvin. Two feet and getting deeper.

Sometimes, “discretion is the better part of valor”.
Calvin has all the ‘tools’ for this job except skill, experience, manual dexterity. etc.
Should Hobbes ‘wrench’ the tool out of Calvin’s hand? It’s going to be ‘a violent wrench’ one way or the other.

Hobbes, you can help Calvin by getting a boat and two of every animal (one of the tigers being yourself).
Also, I love Hobbes expression in the third panel, like he knows nothing good can come of this.

If he doesn’t kill himself first!
Or if Dad doesn’t kill him first!

I wonder if the door is closed?
How deep can it get?
Could our intrepid heroes drown? Mom and Dad need Radar O’Reilly’s ears, Superman’s x-ray eyes, Flash’s speed, and Wonder Woman’s rope.
