from the time Calvin was waiting at the bus stand until alighting from bus, Susie is continually discouraging Calvin…
but then again, she was the one who reminded him of the homework…
Morning to ALL! I had kids turn in rock collections that included pieces of glass and little pieces of brick but the interesting thing was that they had classified them! Calvin, you just might make it!
I don’t usually like to get political in these forums, but I can’t help but notice how so many people are cheering Calvin on for his all-American, never-say-die fighting spirit, while Suzie is just another bug, carrying on until her voice just becomes a buzzing in his ears.
But this morning I’m seeing Calvin as the ultimate irresponsible jerk (make no mistake, I love him, but he is a jerk a lot of the time), desperately trying to pick up the pieces of a crisis for which he is wholly responsible. And I can only sympathize with Suzie’s frustration, as the voice of reason who is totally ignored.
Maybe I’m just being influenced by current events. I can’t help but wonder if Calvin grew up and went to work for BP …
Hears a thought: Tell Ms. Wormwood all your bugs were Army bugs and they all had to BUG OUT! and you will have to hand your collection in a few days late?
If I remember correctly, he gets a
horrible grade, which will
effectively demonstrate what
lack of responsibility will get him.
Im somewhat of an expert on this subject, because I got a LOT of really poor grades (barely passed most classes) and that eventually taught me to be responsible for myself (as a side effect, I’m sadly able to stand by and watch someone fail horrifically without any sympathy for them whatsoever, an trait you seem to also posess). So eventually, he’s going to learn responsibility, he’ll just learn it the hard way (which is arguably the better way).
Now, having said all that, he didn’t grow up to work for BP, and in fact, over the course of ten years, never even aged a day! It’s because he’s a make-believe character in a cartoon. Perhaps you feel he’s a jerk because you regret having acted this way at 6 years old?
Trying to pass off the lint reminds me fooling the quality instpector. If your boxcar full of grain has one too many rat droppings in the sample, pull it out of line and send it through later - it might pass the second time.
I wonder if there are Calvin’s working at BP. Those Engineers don’t seem to know what their doing. To others who might have ideas how to stop that total disaster might find out how to let BP know for they’re not getting it. And the costs keep rising.
Calvin may flunk life’s assignments miserably, but his frantic antics have passed the comic humor test with a resounding A+ for 30 years….and that’s good enough for me.
What if Susie is just going to eventually steal Calvin’s collection and turn it in for herself once he has done all this hard work? Wouldn’t put it past her as mean as she is to him (actually a trait of being in love at that age). I don’t see her carrying her project.
Calvin’s future tax forms loom in my mind: “Why should I have to do those things? Bunch of government intrusion in MY life!” Remember when this kid didn’t seem to have political leadership potential?
Boy o Boy his income tax need a audit his marriage vows are in doubt who ever he is working for needs to check his paper work, but wait he will stay 6 yrs old we are safe from Calvin for know
For Calvin when he gets older, law school and then politics. He shows every indication of going in that direction, especially national politics, at which he will be stellar, no doubt….
Susie’s not going to try and steal Calvin’s hastily put together bug collection from him!
Susie is the type of girl who listens in class and does her homework instead of spending her time daydreaming about things like red propeller beanie hats(!) so she’s already done her own assignment. If you’ll remember yesterday’s strip when Calvin tried to buy her collection on the bus for a quarter before bumping his price up to .30 cents, she told him (very loudly I might add) that she “spent a month on this!” So Calvin (nor anybody else) has to worry about Susie stealing his bug collection. Now Moe on the other hand ………. well, if he’s in the same class as Calvin and Susie, then he’s a different story!!!!!
“The teacher isn’t going to look closely at all the kids bug collections. But I am sure she will look closely at Calvin’s”
ROFL
That’s the exact sort of “slacker profiling” that plagued my entire schooling experience… just because I could turn in a “whipped up in 2 minutes” project and get a decent grade doesn’t mean I was going to do it every single time…
Funny thing about human nature, we often root for the irresponsible charmer who gets himself into a tight place.
“Come on Calvin, you can do it!”
Maybe it’s because we are all sometimes irresponsible (even charmless drudges like me), Admit it. At one point each of us has been in his shoes. So relax. Everyone screws up from time to time (to time to time to…) if not in one area of our lives, then another..
So judgmental! Did you use astrology? A crystal ball? Psychic powers? I’m assuming that only one of those psuedosciences would lead you to presume to read so much into my provocative little post.
I’m a sympathetic person; I just don’t feel much for Calvin’s predicament because (1) he brought it on himself and (2) as you observed, he’s make-believe!
As for what I was like at six, no, I was nothing like Calvin. Of course he’s a jerk – loud, obnoxious, self-centered – at least some of the time. But as I already observed, I love the little guy.
And of course he grew up. The adult Calvin is out there in an alternate reality somewhere . . . and it really wouldn’t surprise me if he were one of the irresponsible people at BP. But in another universe his inventive mind just might make him the guy who comes up with a way to stop the oil currently gushing into the Gulf …
Been there ,done that Calvin. I remember the days. A little known fact: The government gave $10,000,000 grant to find the purpose of Mosquitos and concluded : 6 drumsticks and no meat on them , so useless.
To me that comment is not political. It’s a comment on typical big business. Well…. Maybe political but the fault lies with all sides of the political spectrum. Unfortunately, Big Money talks Big!

I did something like that when I was in school. I did a poster presentation in less than ten minutes and came in second in the entire class.
The title was, and I am not kidding you a bit…”Buggy bugs bugging you, Bub?”

I hope Calvin finds a Wood Worm to highlight his collection. That could be classic depending on how Miss wormwood takes it.
