Danae: History can be very disturbing when you hear the real story from someone who lived through it... Dad: Uh, like what? Danae: Well...like the feminist movement in the '70s. Dad: OK...what about it? Danae: I'm sorry Daddy...I thought you knew. It was an alien plot to enslave men, but was thwarted by the great freedom fighter Saint Hefner... Dad: Yeah, somehow that was left out of the textbooks.

Hefner is a flawed hero but a hero nonetheless. I put him in the same pantheon as Betty Friedan, Dr. Ruth, Alan Guttmacher (author of widely available how-to books on sex), and the inventors of the birth-control pill. His enemy wasn’t the feminist movement of the ’70s but the sexual fear and ignorance that ruled prior eras, especially the repressed ’50s. I’ll miss him when he’s gone.

I’m starting to like that old fisherman. A little cynical spin on history is good for the genre. Helps pique curiosity to know more.

The Aliens vs Hefner war has lasted decades. I salute Hugh for keeping men everywhere abreast of the bare facts and helping us rise to the occassion when confronted by the enemy’s best shots month after month after month.

JonD17: I’m sorry I didn’t get to reply to you yesterday. So, you grew up in Chicago? No, Margeritem, I could have (should have) made that statement clearer. I grew up in Wisconsin and hence the mention of the braves. My point was to be that even though the Braves were often in W.S. contention in those days, The Cubs, with Ernie Banks overshadowed them for many of us. Soemtimes I use too much “shorthand” in my comments and they become unclear. btw, you have mail
