Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for June 09, 2011
Transcript:
Gunther: "Your gown looked great in my drawings. But it didn't sew up right. It got too floofy, and the colors were awful" Luann: "Yeah. Well, I tried to wear it with pride" Gunther: "You made it work, Luann. I have the trophy to prove it" Luann: "We're a good team, Gunth" Gunther: "Yes. ...A good team for what, exactly, I don't know" Luann: "Sometimes it's fun being meaningless teammates on a pointless team"

That’s the entire principle behind fantasy leagues.

And that means……………….What????

Too floofy; colors…awful. That about sums it up, Gunther, and I fear Luann has inadvertently told you off as meaningless and pointless. Cheer up, though; things could (theoretically) get worse….
rayannina over 13 years ago
Heck, maybe THIS year, he could go out with Rosa. See how Luann likes it when Quill heads back to Oz and her perpetual Plan B is otherwise occupied …

It seems that Luann is being as clear as SHE can be that she enjoys being with Gunther and working with him, BUT, she’s telling him, that’s ALL there is. Don’t be confused that we have a romantic future together – it’s meaningless and pointless. Nobody who’s as smitten as Gunther is/was wants to hear that, but it needs to be stated.

If she is self centered and mean spirited, she would have dissed Gunther and worn another evening gown and then insulted him about his clowny gown. She did not do any of that. She swallowed her pride, put on the ridiculous gown because Gunther spent hours making it and paraded around in it on stage in front of an audience of whom she knew she will see at school. To me, she is loyal to Gunther as a FRIEND, not romantically (I suspect that is what you were implying) and refused to hurt his feelings. She did not think of herself – she considered Gunther’s feelings. Her interests are typical of an average teen girls – self absorbed. BUT she does read to children and wear costumes that Gunther makes at the library which average teen girls don’t do. You described Tiffany, actually. Can you imagine Tiffany swallowing her pride and climbing into Gunther’s gown and walking across the stage in it? Could you imagine Tiffany reading to children in costumes knowing she would get nothing in return, at least teen boys’ attentions and praises. Tiffany has no other interests but to self-promote. I suspect, like Coach Kleats, you will say Tiffany is kind-hearted and thinks of others.

am i the only one who thinks gunther is gay?
bdaverin over 13 years ago
Gunther’s shown himself to be very interested in girls. He and Luann have kissed and she was stunned at how good he was at it.As for someone else’s nonsense about Luann’s personality, she’s been working on her sympathy skills and shown some great development over time.
Ottodesu over 13 years ago
bdaverin: You are quite correct. Gunther is both way too interested and flustered by girls to be same-gender oriented. Being geeky and having seamster skills is not effete. He does not try to pretend to be a woman, but he does adore them and welcomes their attentions. He also cannot understand them, which is possibly the ultimate proof of not being gay.

I agree with CJBz – you have described Tiffany, not Luann. Luann has always been a good friend to Gunther, completely loyal and never mean. What are you even talking about? Gunther is a teenage boy: I have teenage boys. They do not always think with their brains. The storyline will not have Luann and Gunther as a couple – but they will always be good friends. Eventually, he will hook up with Rosa (I believe). But what would going out for sports do for him? That is hardly the answer to very many questions – and never the answer to relationship difficulties.

Luann is comfortable around Gunther.

In other words, she’s a teen age girl. Nothing wrong with that. But not typical for these days because she’s not pregnant.

Do good friends have to make a team for a cause or can they just be good friends and be comfortable together.

Luann, I can’t stand you. On the one hand I cheer when you get close to The Aussie, and then you make me want to scream at how you keep Gunther on the hook. Quit messing with that guy!
Doctor11 over 13 years ago
People, people, Gunther ISN’T gay! He just has a hard time expressing how he feels around Luann, who is being the typical female teenager, and hasn’t realized that one of her friends has the hots for her.
doverdan over 13 years ago
Our Gunther goes gaga whenever a girl looks at him and smiles. He has shown this with Tiff and Bernice in particular. He will with Rosa. His ‘loyalty’ to Luann can quickly fade under such circumstances, and it has. /// Lu & Quill have a link that is romantic — and strongly hormone based.
capneasy over 13 years ago
I think that CJBz hit the nail on the head, but to me the most interesting thing is how many people seem to read Luann with real intensity and interest. That’s the same reason I enjoy it as much as I do.
marvee over 13 years ago
This week’s strips have shown Luann and Gunther having their most mature discussion, sharing thoughts and feelings as old friends without the distraction of sexual attraction/frustration.
marvee over 13 years ago
I really wonder about people who seem to wantto label some characters to be gay (e.g. Quill, now Gunther). What ’s the motivation?
doverdan over 13 years ago
Gunther vs. Quill — Gunther is shy, unsure of himself, and he constantly seeks recognition. He is attracted to any gal who gives that to him. — Quill is self-confident to the point of being cocksure and smart-alecky — a ‘smartypants’ the little kids would call him. He never showed any interest in Tiff, which demonstrates that he did not feel the need for her as trophy girlfriend even in a new environment. He liked Luann, for reasons obscure. But that was that. // Some here don’t care for Quill, and that is IMO because he comes off too self-assured for their taste.

What is with this forum? All I’ve seen so far is Quill is gay, now it’s Gunther. You are a bunch of sick dudes. And thanks Otttodesu for your post, with an answer back to this Dave guy.

I respond to a post before I read down the rest of the comments. People, please. Think back to your high school days. Have you forgotten? How would you have responded to a classmate who wore his shirt buttoned at the collar, whose favorite activity was sorting books in the library, and who was passionate about fashion design? Who never really dated, but made a show of liking a girl he knew he could never have? Certainly not all gay teens display those types of character traits. Some are on the wrestling team (or some other sport). But they all have to undergo the same type of introspection that Gunther is. He knows he is approaching the Big Fork In The Road. Will he choose the road less traveled? That will make all the difference.
michaeljy over 13 years ago
Look at the last panel again. Gunther doesn’t know what “team” he is playing for! (Is there anyone out there who is unfamiliar with that euphemism?) Luann’s response: Don’t worry about it. It doesn’t matter. We’re BFFs.

I don’t think Greg Evans has enough understanding of ANY kind of sexuality to bring homosexuality into this strip except as a mention on the side. None of his characters has any real sexuality to them, least of all his Brad/Toni pairing.
doverdan over 13 years ago
Luann and Tiff | Luann is unsure of herself and constantly seeks recognition. Her songs and poems reflect insecurity. She would feel good with a boyfriend who made a big fuss over her. Aaron never filled that bill. Quill might, but she remains attracted to any good-looking guy that she sees (e.g. the lifeguard). // Tiff acts as if totally self-confident — sure that she is the most beautiful girl in school. = Most of us don't care for Tiff, she is far too self-centered and selfish for our taste. = However, whether Tiff is really self confident or not is an issue that we might debate. (Perhaps all that makeup is being applied to cover up a girl who is by no means self-assured.)

Many a gay lad has feigned interest in girls to avoid being called out before they’re ready to come out. As my gay manager used to say when I was single, ‘Does he have a job? Does he dress nice? He’s gay’. He was right until he was wrong.

I think she effectively gave him encouragement for his work and shows herself to be a good friend even though she has no romantic interest in him and also makes that clear. He might do better with Rosa or even Crystal.

I don’t think Gunth is gay. He is loyal to Luann and a very good friend of hers.

I don’t think Gunth is gay. He is loyal to Luann and a very special friend of hers. And by the way, where does all this gayness come from…..???
9thCapricorn over 13 years ago
Ah. I suspect you ARE Coach Kleats. You two are saying the exactly the same things about Tiffany and Luann in regards to the play, the veteran’s hospital, Delta…So that figures. How did Luann take the play away from Gunther? He was in dressmaking and Luann got the lead – she took that from Tiffany only because Tiffany proved to be a lousy actress. Who made the decision? Of course the play director, not Luann…she only proved she acted better than Tiffany. Gunther pouted only because he did not want Luann around Quill and not because Luann pulled the rug from under him. Delta – she conspired to make the profit for herself but it backfired. As it usually does and the pageant was the latest incident in attempt to make money and fame. As for the Vet’s hospital, she did not realize the hospital was filled with old and disabled men – she thought she was competing Luann for male attention but she did get it and did enjoy it – any male attention will do. I guess some men will always view pretty girls as innocent and pure-hearted. I would NOT be surprised at all if you think Veronica is a poor rich girl and Betty is the evil one.
