Tom the Dancing Bug by Ruben Bolling 1776, Philadelphia Ben Franklin: And so, I propose a new nation, founded on the principles of democracy! Man: Yeah, right. What's the angle, Benny? Ben Franklin: Okay, here's the scam...it'll make us all rich for centuries. Man #2: Now yer talkin', scumbag. Ben Franklin: We muscle out the British and get our own country, see? And we keep increasing our standard of living! Return on investment through the friggin' roof! Man #2: But HOW? Ben Franklin: Expansion! We got a whole CONTINENT to move in on! And the NEW investors pay off the OLD ones! Man#1: Investors? Ben Franklin: Investors, citizens...call 'em what ya want, Johnny A. Man #2: Okay, but we can only expand for so long. Ben Franklin: But the population will continue to grow, T.J. Plus, we'll look so rich -- on PAPER -- lenders will be lining up! Man #1: So we borrow from foreign states? Ben Franklin: Japan, China...we keep finding NEW SAPS to pay off the OLD ONES! Man #2: Beautiful! But eventually we won't be able to borrow or tax any more! Ben Franklin: Then the whole thing collapses like a house of cars. Ben Franklin: But that won't happen for 240 YEARS! What a party we'll have in the meantime. Man #1: Look -- the investment scheme looks like a pyramid. Early Investors Ben Franklin: Yeah...hey, let's put a pyramid on our one-dollar bill! Man #2: Haw! We're gonna have some angry suckers in the 21st century!

I wish this didn’t make so much sense.

Ben (when asked what the Constitutional Convention had produced) said, “A Republic!” (NOT a Democracy). But just as ‘Democracy’ has become the politically correct word for our government, Americans of the next century will probably talk about a “Madoff” (rather than a PONZI) scheme.

At least the strip didn’t call us a democracy, just said we were founded on the principles. But fogey, I’m afraid you’re correct about another future term.

The USA as a pyramid scheme

The Lefties don’t dare really understand America because it would require them to admit how un-American they are.

this one is deeply disturbing because it is so close to the truth.

pschearer, get your head out of your a** or the Anne Coulter book, whichever one. They’re so similar…

What he said was, “A Republic, if you can keep it.” I could say a lot of things here, like, “Then why are hundreds of thousands people trying to get into this country all the time, legally or otherwise, and I don’t see anywhere near as many trying to get out?” But what I will say is, if you don’t like this country, go live somewhere else, for Christ’s sake!

Ouch, everyone’s getting a little testy. Chill out folks, it’s only a cartoon, although one that’s hitting a little too close to home.

“I’d love to see an American government that wanted to serve all the people & help the disadvantaged & oppressed rather than helping the wealthy get wealthier…”
MatthewJB, I have lived in countries such as you describe, and in their egalitarian quest, everyone winds up equally poor. Give me a country with incentive for individuals to succeed, not one which wants to “spread the wealth around”.
DeeBerg13 has correctly described the incentives this country creates, and folks from those benevolent egalitarian nations (see above) often risk their very lives to come here.

What we have here is failure to communicate!

Is that Ed Asner playing John Adams?
Ben looks disturbingly like Dick Cheney!

It could also be that immigrants are needed to feed the big Madoff scheme: we need people to enter at the bottom of the pyramid.
Countries that “spread the wealth around” (like all of Europe?) don’t need such an intake and in fact they make immigration very hard. It certainly doesn’t mean immigrants don’t want to go there!

tototiti… You want the US to be like Europe? Why don’t you just go live there?

I love your stuff, Ruben, but this time you’re a little off the edge of the map.
The financial ripoff artists are the rich and powerful. At the founding of the US, those people were called “Loyalists” not “revolutionaries”.
As proof of my point, read any history of ANY of the founding fathers AFTER the revolution… they all died penniless, with their families and estates in ruins.
Many were actually hanged.
The Founding fathers were not the Ponzi schemers, they were the ones that were SICK OF the Ponzi scemers in London!

Uhhh, unless I’m completely mistaken, the intent of the comic is to compare and contrast the goals of modern capitalism to the vision of the Founding Fathers. This is done through substitution, a simple literary device which can be quickly identified through reading comprehension and having a sense of humor.

Ahh… a sense of humor… something greatly lacking in the liberal philosophy and mindset.

Hello comic friends!
I’ve just done a scathing interview of Ruben Bolling at http://gocomics.typepad.com/editors/
But I warn you! Do not go into this no-holds barred interview on an empty stomach for Ruben speaks candidly on topics most people would rather not address: Cher, Peter Gabriel, Christian Slater, unicorns and snug-fitting pants.
Thank you for your time. Commence commenting!
