I wish this didn’t make so much sense.

Ben (when asked what the Constitutional Convention had produced) said, “A Republic!” (NOT a Democracy). But just as ‘Democracy’ has become the politically correct word for our government, Americans of the next century will probably talk about a “Madoff” (rather than a PONZI) scheme.

At least the strip didn’t call us a democracy, just said we were founded on the principles. But fogey, I’m afraid you’re correct about another future term.

What he said was, “A Republic, if you can keep it.” I could say a lot of things here, like, “Then why are hundreds of thousands people trying to get into this country all the time, legally or otherwise, and I don’t see anywhere near as many trying to get out?” But what I will say is, if you don’t like this country, go live somewhere else, for Christ’s sake!

Ouch, everyone’s getting a little testy. Chill out folks, it’s only a cartoon, although one that’s hitting a little too close to home.

MatthewJB, I have lived in countries such as you describe, and in their egalitarian quest, everyone winds up equally poor. Give me a country with incentive for individuals to succeed, not one which wants to “spread the wealth around”.

DeeBerg13 has correctly described the incentives this country creates, and folks from those benevolent egalitarian nations (see above) often risk their very lives to come here.

What we have here is failure to communicate!

It could also be that immigrants are needed to feed the big Madoff scheme: we need people to enter at the bottom of the pyramid.

Countries that “spread the wealth around” (like all of Europe?) don’t need such an intake and in fact they make immigration very hard. It certainly doesn’t mean immigrants don’t want to go there!

I love your stuff, Ruben, but this time you’re a little off the edge of the map.

The financial ripoff artists are the rich and powerful. At the founding of the US, those people were called “Loyalists” not “revolutionaries”.

As proof of my point, read any history of ANY of the founding fathers AFTER the revolution… they all died penniless, with their families and estates in ruins.

Many were actually hanged.

The Founding fathers were not the Ponzi schemers, they were the ones that were SICK OF the Ponzi scemers in London!

Uhhh, unless I’m completely mistaken, the intent of the comic is to compare and contrast the goals of modern capitalism to the vision of the Founding Fathers. This is done through substitution, a simple literary device which can be quickly identified through reading comprehension and having a sense of humor.

Ahh… a sense of humor… something greatly lacking in the liberal philosophy and mindset.
