Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for July 03, 2011
Transcript:
Alice: Agh - ewegh - yuck! Petey: They're just cicadas, Alice. You're the one who's not afraid of anything. Alice: But these're bugs, with all those legs. EURGH. They're scary. Petey: Do what I do. Construct a distancing fantasy as a coping mechanism. Alice: Do what? Petey: I simply imagine the cicadas are my own private army of tiny Mothras all eager to do my bidding. They're instantly transformed from red-eyed monsters into my little pals! Alice: AH. Petey: What is - Alice: Look! I've dressed the cicadas in cute little dresses made of paper napkins! Ha-ha! Who could be scared of that? Help me write their names on them. This one's Darlene. Petey: Yikes! They've found cicadas around here wearing strange paper outfits, suggesting a possible species of super-intelligent cicadas. And they all had girls' names, too. Mom: EWGH! Don't tell the kids. It'll just scare them.

This one must be an old one. Alice doesn’t quite look herself.

Cute! I can’t see the date but this feels like a retro comic.
And Mr. Thompson I don’t know if you read these, but your Reuben is well deserved! It occurred to me that Cul de Sac is the only comic with character development, unlike nameless others that are variations of a theme (angry/stupid, lazy, etc.). Please keep making us laugh for as long as you’re able. God speed!

We have ‘Katydids’ here in the south. I think the cicadas might be related.

I have my own private army of Mothras, too! They’re ALL named Darlene!

It’s great to see the evolution of the characters!

In Australia cicada shells (when they shed their junior body) made great badges, we would hook them to our school uniform with the barbs on their little legs. Yeah, alice is the epitome of an aussie girl.

Pete and Alice – great ideas – wish I had seen this way back when! Cicadas are okay – until you find your neighborhood in the middle of one of those 17-year cicada cycles. 1000s and 1000s massing together, landing on anything, singing and shrilling for mates. It’s been 20-some years and I still get the willies.

I don’t suppose Richard could post a full-sized Sunday version over at his blog like last week?Seems a shame to miss out on the cicada mating ritual. Or at least his depiction of cicada first base, whichever the case may be ; )TZT!!!

I’ve seen this before. I’m pretty sure it’s from the first year. RT has it on his blog somewhere.
