While browsing through a bookstore a few years ago (yes, there used to be such things), I saw a book called “How to Toilet Train Your Cat”. Thinking it was a joke, I picked it up. Much to my surprise, it was totally serious!

The problem with cats using the toilet is after they finish they always turn around to bury it. I can’t imagine (or maybe i can) a cat splashing in toilet water trying bury it’s business.

We always had at least one cat when I was a kid. They all did those necessities out in the yard, and buried it. We had one cat who was fascinated by a small stream of water from a faucet, so much that it would let it run over her head as well as bat at it with a paw. We had another female who wanted to retrieve my folks cigarette packages (which were multilayer- paper with metal foil and cellophane). The cellophane crinkled with a good noise and the foil with paper gave it a little solidity for a good throw. She would not bother to chase unless you gave a good throw- like the next room. Eventually I saw her teaching a kitten to do the same (batting it and making encouraging sounds).

During one move, our cat used the motel toilet. Never used a toilet before or after.

Duh! If you don’t want the cat to flush the toilet, then close the door! Cats do flush toilets — I remember a very cute YouTube video of one doing it and loving the sound.

Cats can learn to use the toilet, and do not try to “bury” it. However, this requires agility, even for a cat, since the toilet is not sized for them. When they get older, and lose some of that agility, they have difficulty using the toilet – and may not be able to relearn the litter box. So based on experience, teaching cats to use the toilet is now considered cruel.BTW, human health is also better served by squatting on the loo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squat_toilet
