Tom the Dancing Bug by Ruben Bolling You wanna know if I saw that movie? I don't NEED to. I'll tell you the TRUE story of the... THE RISE OF PLANET OF THE APES For millions of years, there were tons of DIFFERENT KINDS OF APES on Earth. Australopithecines, primitive chimps, and lots, lots more. Then, long ago, through a quirk of evolution, ONE PARTICULAR APE SPECIES suddenly got much more INTELLIGENT. This ape developed CULTURE and TOOLS and TECHNOLOGY and became an immensely successful species. But it was still an APE, and its increased BRAIN SIZE didn't change its ape-like lust for DOMINANCE and TERRITORY! Charley: So, as its success caused it to spread into every corner of the world, it was still cruel to each other and other species. Charley: So, yeah. Humans ARE a type of ape, and we literally LIVE on a planet of the apes. Man: Aw, you're just bitter 'cause you're an australopithecine! Charley: Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape!

Why did I need to read the side cartoon to be able to understand this week’s Tom…?

I saved & opened the image in GIMP. It’s 251.8 MB, 63.375 inches wide by 84.847 inches high It looks just about the right size at 12.5% magnification (in GIMP, get it here; it’s FREE!) By the way, the comic would have drawn a chuckle from Chuck Heston. Then he would have shot it for being too big for it’s britches…

Aristotle defined Man as “the rational animal”. The important part is the “rational”.
But reason is volitional and not automatic. Think of all the people you’ve known who, at some critical time in their lives, stop thinking and go entirely with their emotions, often to (self-) destructive effect. Emotions are valuable parts of life, but they can’t distinquish truth from falsehood, least of all right from wrong. To be ruled by emotions alone is the only choice for other animals, but to be human is to chose to think. “Think” is more than an old IBM advertising slogan; it is the human moral imperative.
And if you disagree, you may want to think more about it.

I clicked the framed print option, then went back, and it displayed normally.

I don’t think humans are particularly rational. It has been said, accurately I think, that humans use reason only when every other method of dealing with a problem has failed. But maybe it’s not as efficient or effective as it’s reputed to be.

The reason Republicans didn’t evolve is because they think primate change is a hoax.

Sorry, Eryx, Charley doesn’t want fellow apes with good taste, he wants apes that taste good.

By the way, runar, my reaction to your “Primate Change” pun was the same as Huxley’s reaction to Darwin’s Origin of Species: It’s so obvious in retrospect that I’m ashamed I didn’t think of it myself.

I played The Kinks-Apeman after reading this weeks most excellent strip- and it kind of pulled it all together for me. Nice to see Charlie working again for you Mr. Bolling.

I love The Kinks! I’ve always considered them the Court Jesters of the Brit-rock hierarchy.
