Rat: Hey, Goat, I got your reply to that joke I e-mailed you and I could help but notice you used that rather hackneyed acronym, 'lol.' Goat: Yeah. 'Laughing out loud.' Why? Noise: CRACK. Rat: I'm gonna stop that acronym one Internet user at a time.

An acronym avalanche? Stephan, you know you were PBFI .(Practically begging for it.)
legaleagle48 about 13 years ago
I hate to say it, but Rat DOES have a point. Those acronyms really ARE used to death on the Internet — and a lot of them are a BEAR to figure out. Whatever happened to using plain English online?
Woody157 about 13 years ago
Ah yes. The Kings English. That reminds me of the LOL (little old lady) in church when the pastor was using a modern version of The Bible. She stood up and said, “If the King James Version was good enough for Jesus it is good enough for me!”

Sometimes, one needs these to indicate the comment one is making is intended to be humorous. As opposed to explaining the joke. Or worse - ending it with, “insert laugh(s)here. . ..”

I use “lol” in spoken conversation now… (that is, I actually say “lol,” not the individual letters. Actually, I think I say a lot of supposed Internet acronymns this way. I am strange…
sentient_today about 13 years ago
Don’t worry, we also use it in real life conversations (cause we really have them still).

I just thought of another one, in online videos, peope say “Oh Em Gee” (omg), but I’ve always said “Om-guh.” Maybe the comic is right, these phrases just weren’t meant for civilized discourse.
(That said, I doubt I’ll be changing my ways. Though I will continue to use proper grammar on the Internet!)
mbmacneill about 13 years ago
LOL! oops!
Olddog1 about 13 years ago
Right on, Rat. It’s used when the topic isn’t meant to be funny and the comment is far from funny. Too often just a reflex with NO relation to the subject.
Woody157 about 13 years ago
If I remember correctly, 4 or 5 years ago (maybe less) there was a movement afoot to reduce the use of the tern ‘9/11’. That got no where fast. Another one that went No Where is the use of ‘freedom fries’ cause we were ‘upset’ with the French..
Tennessee_Budd about 13 years ago
Radish, “prithee” means “I pray thee,” so “prithee pray” is a redundancy.

So true! And think about the games folks played with the language long before our time. English is easy to learn and impossible to master.

I’ve felt this way for years. I was sick of LOL about twenty years ago.
rumplesnitz about 13 years ago
LOL!
LarrBerr about 13 years ago
I agree about the acronyms being overly used. Lol doesn’t bother me TOO much if it’s in response to a joke. Although it should only be if it actually made you laugh out loud. Ha! Works equally well, is shorter and more of a real response. And you should only use ROFLOL. Should only be used if you are in fact rolling on the floor. Sadly I see LOL used in some peoples every post. Often several times in a single post on message boards. Often times when they are being entirely serious. I don’t think they even know what LOL means. “My mother died of cancer. Lol”
Ottodesu about 13 years ago
After Douglas’ post, I feel a little trivial saying this, but LOL is not just over-anachronimising words. To me it is part of “lolling around”, which is a form of ennui.
AmariT about 13 years ago
Lol has a purpose in text conversation. It lets people know that you found something funny without having to say the comparitively awkward “that was funny” or “you made me laugh.” It’s basically a text version of in-person laughing since that doesn’t translate well into text. The issue I have with lol is when people start using it during in-person conversations.
