I still buy the books I want to read (Just bought Cien Anos de Soledad as part of an Amazon order), it was on my “buy later” list and I needed one more item for free shipping. It keeps my brain working to read a novel in Spanish. It does not matter to me that my bookshelves have a real mixture of colors with many paperbacks; I buy what I can find and afford, but it looks better than an empty room with a stack of “readers”.

In the movie Fahrenheit 451 reading was banned and the ‘firemen’ went around and burned all the books. Can you imagine an e-reader bonfire?

This actually happened in a new school in Columbia, SC this year. There are NO BOOKS at all in the school – each kid was issued an iPad. The library has chairs, desks, and beanbag chairs. That’s it.

A school I substitute in is in the process of issuing a laptop to each student. It will have all their textbooks, for all their classes on it. Only one thing to carry home at night. It will also have many other lessons and learning tools, assignments from classroom teachers, etc…They will still have books in their “Media Center”. That’s what they call libraries in schools now. But any library that doesn’t embrace the new technologies will be making a mistake. Fortunately, both educators and librarians are smart enough to know that!

susan, from yesterday….My mom would always vacuum on Saturday. She worked full time. My dad would be watching the game on TV and when she got near him, she would say, “Lift your legs!” He would, and she would vacuum under them. Then she’d say “OK” and he’d put them down…
