Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for September 11, 2011
Transcript:
Boy says, "Aww, this is sweet! Building a sand castle, kiddies?" Nate says, "Something like that." Boy says, "Better look out, scrubs! I might just knock it over!" Nate says, "No, you won't." Boy says, "Yeah? Well, I'll come back later and we'll see about that!" Nate says, "Fine." Nate says, "You won't knock it over." LATER...

I have no idea where I was or what I was doing. To be totally honest, the calendar says it’s been 10 years, but it feels to me like that attack happened on Sept. 11, 1901, it’s been so long. I really only barely remember it.
It actually took me about two minutes to realize that it was the Twin Towers. I initially thought Nate had put a rod in one of them, which would result in a foot injury if Randy tried to knock it over, hence fulfilling his prediction.

Slept in. My mother called me and said “Watch the news. Some poor pilot’s run into the big tower in New York.” I stood there watching with her, over coffee, and while we watched, the other plane struck. We both about hit our knees. This was no poor pilot’s accident. This was a terrorist act. Yes, we were selfish. “Why, Lord, after what happened in our own hometown, only 6 years ago?!!! (OKC bombing, April 1995) Why will you continue to let innocent babies and others die for a madman’s insanity?!!!” At least now, McVeigh and Bin Ladin are down in the flames in front of their Master. “And the smoke from their torment will rise forever…”

I was getting ready to go to work – didn’t have to be in quite so early that day – and my husband called to tell me that some pilot had hit one of the towers. I turned on the TV and was talking with him, relaying what the Today Show commentators were saying, and saw the 2nd plane gliding in. I remember telling him that it was going to hit the 2nd tower, and a split second later, it did. Terrible.

I was working in my office when I heard on my radio that a plane had hit the WTC. I thought at first that it was just an accident (during WWII, an Army bomber accidentally ran into the Empire State Building when on a training flight). Then my boss came into my office and told me a SECOND plane had hit…

Out of curiosity how did they get the sand to stay straight up and down like that?

I was on my way to work in Edmonton. It was 6:45-ish. The radio personalities I was listening to had CNN on. By the time I got to work, they had reported seeing a second plane striking the twin towers. By then I knew the U.S. was under attack.

I was in bed, recovering from pneumonia. Got bored with the book I was reading and turned on the TV just in time to see the second plane hit. Later that day I got a call from my mother that my cousin, who worked at the Pentagon, hadn’t been heard from. It was 2 days before we learned he was safe and unharmed.

I was at my desk about a mile from the Pentagon, with a clear view of National Airport. I must have turned off my car radio about the time the first plane struck. By the time my boss told me the news, the second had struck too. I joined everyone watching TV, trying to comprehend that this had been a deliberate attack, when someone rushed in saying another plane had hit the Pentagon, and we could see the smoke from the windows on one side. After a while, we were told to get back to work. While watching people stream out of the airport on foot, I tried to reach my brother in NYC, because I knew his wife worked for a financial firm, but I couldn’t reach him. I finally reached my parents, who said she didn’t work there but cousins did. One never came home. I had lunch with a stranded stranger. I will never forget the emptiness of the airport for weeks, the impromptu memorials along a fence not far from the Pentagon, the fighter planes overhead, the fear and the sadness balanced by the sense of community and mutual support.

I was at work and on my breaks and lunch I’d run upstairs to watch a tv. We also rounded up all the radios we could find so everyone could listen as they worked.
Our dental equipment company had sent a team, including one of my friends, to New York to install equipment and they were staying maybe a dozen blocks from the World Trade Center. They had even planned to go visit there before starting work that morning but had stayed out late the night before so didn’t go!
Anyway, it was tough waiting to hear from them- they were too scared to fly home, when planes were finally back in the air, so they drove all the way back to Oregon in a rental car!

Well done.It was one of the brightest clearest beautiful days you hear about, it was the first day of school for NYC kids I was at work in the school. It was a few days after we had burried my dad, who had spent his life working in downtown Manhattan. We heard the news around the floor that a plane had hit the tower. Like everyone we thought it was an accident, then another we heard I couldn’t believe it. We put a little radio on & heard about the pentagon this just didn’t feel real. I looked across the room at the other teacher with the " k" kids n I said/mouthed we are being attacked! We are at war! Then we went on lock down all morning lines of parents running to get their kids n staff members leaving n wondering if their loved ones where anywhere near what we now call ground zero. It was needless to say surreal tragic heartbreaking and angry day. I and everyone will never forget.

The reason for no rememberance of the Chileans is because the U.S is a superpowerand will do what it wants and will depend onthe mainstream media to not cover the attrocities the country is doing. Yes 9/11 in theU.S is a tragedy but the reason it happened isbecause of the U.S going into other countriesand killing their citizens. It was not unprovoced

Excuse me, but 9/11 is more than a sad event. It brought the USA together, and helped us create safety measures for any possible terrorist attacks in the future. Having a comic be a tribute to 9/11 is just a way of showing our thanks to those heroes who saved people in the twin towers, steered the plane away from the capital, and helped people out of the rubble. It is also important to keep it in our minds that this sort of thing can and will happen, so that we do not become ignorant.

I’m not very old yet and this occurrence happened way before I was born. I first saw this comic in the books since they were my only way of reading Big Nate. I’m Canadian so this really just confused me. It was only today that I learned about the tragedies that befell America during that horrific day. I had heard of its occurrence and knew that it was a terrorist attack but I didn’t think much of it since it was over and didn’t affect me in any sort of way. After I learnt that the structures Nate Francis and Teddy made were the twin towers led me to learn about what happened during that day. Honestly, this gave me a newfound appreciation and respect for the trio for commemorating the victims during the victims of 9/11. Never forget… We salute you
