Toni: "So...I tell the captain I'll quit if he doesn't hire Brad back?"
TJ: "I was kissing, Toni. You can't-"
Toni: "Wait. This isn't a good-"
Toni: "Excellent idea, TJ! Thanks!"
TJ: "Ok. yeah. You're welcome"
I think you folks don’t have a clue! Toni is punishing T.J. by making him THINK she’s going to quit. She may have the captain in on the joke, too. Stay tuned…..
Greg Evans wouldn’t be so retrograde in his thinking to think that the woman in the couple has to quit her job because the man is the one who has to have the job, would he? He’s never really given any indication of being anything of the sort. Surely there’s more here than meets the eye? Please?
Toni is not that stupid. TJ is already suffering. He realizes that the likelyhood of Toni losing her job from such an action is almost guaranteed. Right now he’s thinking, “Me and my big mouth!” He’ll not be so quick to offer stupid advice again. Especially when she comes out acting as if she’s been fired.
I noticed that TJ only had two piercings in the November 21st strip, the one in which Toni called him and asked him to come over to the fire station. However, in the strips after that (including this one), TJ has three piercings in one ear. Did he stop at the mall for another piercing on his way to his super-secret meeting with Toni? Or am I just looking at it wrong?
Maybe everyone is looking at this from the wrong angle. Remember, it was Brad who saved Toni from the fall off the ladder, she may be thinking in the back of her head this is the best way to repay him, not saying it’s the best move but could be the mindset here.
Yeah. You know things are gonna get bad when TJ’s looking serious. TJ really hasn’t been as smiley as usual during this whole “Brad got Fired; WeenieWorld; Toni’s Dumb Idea” arc. And now, he’s not even showing his teeth… this is bad, people.
She is sooo acting. She is making the point to emphisize to TJ that this is HIS idea. She made sure that she went with the exact idea that popped out of his mouth. When she comes out “acting” as if she has just been fired, he will have nowhere to run. I wonder how long they’ll let him suffer before setting him up with some ground rules about future meddling?
So Toni is not an ‘idiot’ who ‘followed’ the advice to have first ‘guilt’ and now ‘vengeance’ against the person who she ‘contacted’ in the first place to take out her ‘anger’ on a person that resulted in the said ‘guilt’, not to mention, getting her beau fired?Yeah, TJ is the one to blame for all this puppetry through these ‘mature’ and ‘responsible’ adults.Interesting.At least Brad’s smart enough to learn this long time ago. That said, in my personal opinion, Greg Evans is one of the most observant artists who understand the issues of daily lifestyles and present them beautifully.I wouldn’t be surprised if Toni really go to the chief and gets fired for blackmailing coz that would’ve happened in real life. But then again, its a comic strip, we all want ‘happily ever after’ :)
Toni: Captain, If you don’t rehire Brad, then I’ll quit!Captain: Sorry to hear that Ms Daytona. I’ve been ordered to lay off another firefighter and I thinking Old Lazarus, been here forever you know, but now you are making the decision for me.
Where are some of you getting the idea that she’s putting one over on TJ? If there’s one thing she is, it’s authentic – to put another spin on Jessica Rabbit’s comment, she’s drawn that way (and she speaks and acts that way too).If I were a betting man, and I’m not, I’d probably clean up wagering against a lot of you here. And I’d be surprised indeed if Greg pulled a fast one of his own on us, building up Toni as one kind of person and then revealing her to be totally another.
At last Toni shows her true, dimwitted colours. Those of us who’d been Toni-sceptic from the start stand vindicated. Even if by some deux es machina she does manage to hang on to her job and Brad, this storyline exposes her inner stupidity.
It has to be a rouse on TJ. Any other thing would, overall, put a bad light on the fire fighting profession and all the hero’s in that brotherhood. And in the history of the comic, Mr. Evans has always showed it as the honorable profession it is.
Ahhh, You Know WHAT, Go AHEAD with TJ’s STUPID, idea, Toni.Chances are, YOU are gonna get Fired/Laid-OFF anyway, seeing the Fire Department is STILL cutting its work-force and YOU are employee with LITTLE Seniority.
Good LUCK finding a NEW Job, sister. How much you wanna bet that IF You FIND that job it will be in another City Far away from Brad? Heck I bet your ex-boyfriend Dirk, will end up BEING your NEW, Vengeful, Boss!
Brad’s out work.Toni’s ABOUT to BE out of Work. And Luann’s about to blow her life-savings on a trip to LA in a FUTILE attempt to stop her Not-Boyfriend Quill from getting in the clutches of Tiffany.
And in the END, Old Smiley will, AS USUAL, end up smelling like a rose.
This is gonna be a Bleak, BLEAK Christmas in the VAST Luanniverse……,
Toni is one of those women who have to “save” someone. She tried to help Dirk become a better person. She sees Brad as someone who needed protection and saving from Eiffel. Heck, even her daytime job is saving people (men) from burning buildings.
It’s interesting to see Greg explore it.
But I’m hoping the rest of you are right and it’s a set up to put TJ in his place.
I thought Toni and Brad were employed at different firehouses. How can Toni ask her captain to hire Brad back if her captain hadn’t hired Brad in the first place?
Greg’s doing a great job here, because the reader doesn’t know if she will really do this or teaching TJ a lesson.
I’m betting if she does go to the Captain, he will give her some time to think things through. Which will give Brad a chance to talk her out of it and realize how much she really loves him and propose to her.
Great storyline since, for the moment, I didn’t care if the Quill and Tiffany go to LA or not.
I will later, but right now I’m stuck on Brad and Toni.
I’m sure (I hope?) Greg knows this is not a good thing. People coming from an abusive/codependent past often take two steps forward, one step back. Clearly her love for Brad is clouding her judgment, and so it’s very easy to fall back into old patterns. If sacrificing her job for Brad is what she’s doing, she hasn’t fully learned the lesson/emerged from codependence.
Good grief, this girl is gullible and open to any suggestion. She regretted taking his advice about confronting Brad’s boss. Then she turns around and asks him for more advice. So he says something in kidding, and she’s off. Who in their right mind would risk their job these days? I hope there is no trouble between Brad and TJ.
My hope is: just as the light finally went on for Brad and he saved himself by walking away from Ann Eiffel, there will be a moment of awakening for Toni before she opens her mouth and loses everything.
Just wait – I think you’ll find that you misjudged that probability! And that’s because TJ really has no “lesson” coming to him. .This “evil TJ” conspiracy thing that people are laboring under has been wrong at every turn, and the predicted “payback” denouement will be just as wrong now. .TJ’s a catalyst, but he didn’t tell Toni to do anything she wasn’t already primed to do, and her blaming TJ for the outcome is about as justified as Brad blaming his “messed up” relationship on Ann. Not that Greg wouldn’t be just as illogical having Toni set up some sort of retialtion, but she’s in “full take on the blame” mode, so she won’t share that..There was no payback for Ann, there will be no “lesson” taught to TJ.
Hey, did everyone know that’s Toni’s hair under her arm? Would someone please explain to me how 25 people can see one person asking whether that’s a banana, but they’re all struck blind and can’t see it’s already been answered?
First off, how was I “fine” with Brad being “degraded”? Being laid off due to budget cuts isn’t a moral failing, and I never referred to him as being “unworthy” of Toni. You need to appeal to Greg, not me, if you think he needs a job, I don’t write this stuff..On the contrary, I mentioned more than once that I was ticked off that Greg had turned him from someone who had character and did the right thing in having Dirk arrested, even if it made Toni mad at him, into a conflict-averse wimp who wanted Toni to accept abuse on his behalf so he could placate Ann. I did say it made him a more passive version of Dirk because when it was to his benefit, he asked her to roll over and take the maltreatment. Not cool. Not manly. Not brave. Brad’s asking her to accept the disrespect was the wrong thing – he even admitted he knew it was wrong – but he asked her to do it anyway. .Second, what’s with the revisionism here? Toni had a bone of her own to pick with Ann, aside from Brad – she threatened to report Ann to corporate for how she treated her customers, as well as her workers. She should have left Brad out of it entirely, but really, anything she did would have rebounded on Brad anyway. .But if someone who’s being mistreated speaks up and the abuser retaliates because they were challenged, who’s really in the wrong? Isn’t it the abuser – for being abusive in the first place? .
He lost his job because he finally rediscovered some dignity & pushed off, and that choice involved a lot more than just being ordered to keep Toni away,Brad “didn’t lose his job” – he accepted being rehired in a second, so there was literally no harm, no foul when it came to a paycheck. Then all of a sudden that gold-standard all-important job was unimportant when he realized Ann was trying to play him, and he tossed it. He quit. After, of course, blaming Ann for his mistakes with Toni..Lastly, if everyone “talked” this strip would be a graphic version of Dr. Phil. There’d be no conflict, so – no talking. I’d just like to see some intelligent conflict, rather than this mess.
The Brad-Toni-Ann-Weenie World storyline has been a bit too “heavy”, I need Tiffany to come back and lighten things up a bit. News item: I think I saw Rosa today looking over some mistletoe to surprise Gunther with.
But those are shows of at least 23 minutes length, where, Kramer aside, verbal comedy ruled.
Greg has 3 panels.
If you fill them with more talk, you’d get something like 9CWL at its yakkiest, where the entire panel was filled with dialogue . Gah, that would be like 3 panels of me talking – do you really hate Greg’s readership that much to subject them to that? And you seemed like such a nice person…;D
Frankly, I’m getting weary of all the discussion on whether Brad, Toni and/or PJ was right – or was wrong – and all the justification of the views. Even intolerance of opposite opinions. I’ve tried to focus on the cartoon story and submerge my opinions of motivation and blame. I’m really beginning to transfer my aggravation with the cartoon participants to that of the posters. Sorry, folks, but some of the remarks remind me of the trolls’ postings in the past to justify their unwarranted opinions. You may not think your opinions are unwarranted, but the constant reiteration IS irritating. I’d hope we’d be more understanding of others’ views and less defensive of our own..End of rant …
