what’s a frump?

At least he has his priorities.

Curiously, I do not think I have ever heard the term used to describe a man. I usually associate the derogatory term “frump” with describing a woman. Gender equality????

Actually, slob is more defined as “slovenly or lazy”. The fact that a shirt is “unbuttoned and unpressed” or that it’s not “tucked in” or that any part of a ’gentleman’s attire’ isn’t polished, shined or tailored (or GQ’d or ‘dressed to the nines’ ) had been the “traditional” identifying marks of a ‘slob’ in the past. Which would have also included wearing “Island shirts and sandals”, but not going on vacation. Our society has drifted so far away from dressing more “formally” in public (as shown by the changes in what one wore to view the taping/broadcasting of shows like “The Ed Sullivan Show”, or in the history of “Let’s Make A Deal”, “The Price Is Right” and other talk/variety/game shows throughout history)…-There is no “male” equivalent for “frump”, which is probably why Greg still used it. “Dowdy” is the only other word around.

Thesaurus.com gives the following as synonyms for “frump”: slattern, dowdy person, old bag, schlump. Maybe “schlump” can be the masculine form of “frump.” However, that would lose the alliteration with “Fogerty [sic].” Better let it stand.
