Even by the composition of this scene, it doesn’t make sense.Instead of rushing off to confront her, Bradley waits till the middle of a walk to bring up the question. I wonder if this is going to turn out to be some kind of “dream sequence” – the Ultimate Cop Out.

As unrealistic an ending as it would be, I feel like this arc will end with both Brad and Toni somehow getting hired back.

Good for Brad – there is no point to her doing this. Too bad Greg’s already characterized it as “noble” as well as representing “honor” “integrity” “love” and “commitment”. The real kicker is classifying those virtues as “chick stuff”. Nice to know he has an equally insulting view of what character means to men.

Hey Bill, why DO you read this strip? Just to complain? I’m totally on for people having their opinions and their right to express them. But when it turns into just some sort of catty diatribe I have to question it. Maybe your name should be Bill the Bitcher?

Only a woman who loves Brad that much is willing to risk her own job to get Brad rehired. How many women in the world are willing to do that for their lovers?

I don’t think so. Why would the captain invite Brad just to fire Toni? Brad doesn’t need to be there for that. At the moment, Brad’s only a former employee. Toni needs to go back regardless, whether she’s fired or not, but not Brad. Brad’s being practical, I agree…but his conclusion is based on information that’s incomplete and dated.

Whatever will be will be. These two people got a lot going for them if not in this town come to San Francisco where we are always hiring competent firefighters with excellent references and the pay is over 100K with plenty of overtime.

I think one of the firemen either decided to retire, or is moving to another place that is too far to commute, so asked for a transfer

Absolutely. The Captain called Brad not Toni. The worst it could be is an attempt to get help, to keep Toni from quitting.

If Brad actually ends up back at the fire department and Toni does not lose her job, I’ll expect that one of the frames in tomorrows strip will depict a unicorn galloping by with rainbows shooting out of it’s butt. Just to keep the reality all at the same level.

Wow, add to the growing list of Toni’s unbecoming traits, delusional. I can’t believe that she STILL thinks this is a good way of getting Brad his job back. I hope her butt gets fired, I guess Brad’ll get hired in her place. Honestly I would have found that prospect very annoying if you told me that at the beginning of this arc but given that Toni is proving to be more and more unstable and dumb, I’m just going to go with it if it happens.

The captain may be about to explain the department’s anti-nepotism policy — if they both work for the department, then they can’t get married. Or he just might give them a little counseling — “So get married, already, and give us a new little Luann!”

Honestly, comic strips are not supposed to live in reality all the time. They are created for our enjoyment. I could care less if it is always “accurate.” If you don’t enjoy the story line, find another strip. I LIKE it!

Sometimes jobs can become “available” by shifting funds here or there. As Wiselad said, maybe somebody is going to retire, so they will be able to hire Brad back.

Or maybe there have been negotiations with the city to fund some of the lost positions — it does happen occasionally, even in tough times. It wouldn’t make the strip, since it was behind-the-scenes. But it is plausible.

Remember, Greg is rarely totally predictable. He likes to lead us on and then leave lots of loose ends to be picked up later. For whatever reason he has Toni acting contrary to how she has been in the past, but I think that will change. I suspect the Captain will convince her that “true love” includes self respect, she will stay employed, and Brad will be told to hang on a little longer—he will be rehired when the next person retires (whenever that is.)

The captain is calling Brad’s phone – not Toni’s. He can’t assume they are together at that moment. What does he have to discuss with Brad, since they probably haven’t spoken since his dismissal. Could be good news. Perhaps he checked with some fellow captains and found some expected retirements in other towns. Let’s cross our fingers.
