    Kudos for the info on how to pluralize “ibis.”

    I personally have a mad obsession with making sure people don’t say “octopi,” even though it’s used commonly enough to almost be considered correct.

    Do you know what the better alternatives are?

    The guitar and hula hoops belong to Emery Carl, a street performer at the Pike Place Market in Seattle.

    Baslim, I think you’re right about the plane being a Nieuport 10. The later versions of the Nieuport didn’t enter service until 1916. It would have been unusual to reveal a new airplane before it entered combat.

    I used tineye.com to look for other versions of this picture, but I didn’t find anything that had higher resolution or an identification.

    There’s a second Great War item in the blog: the cottage cheese poster. It was printed by the US Food Administration to encourage people to cut back on their use of meats needed for the war effort (we had about four million men and women in uniform, and we were shipping a lot of food to our allies.)

    Re: FA HTML CODESIt appears that my comment of 2011/11/18 did not travel well. Should have been;*I like to use footnotes, and…

    As long as there is no * followed by a blank space in the remainder of the comment this should work fine.Just goes to show how fast things can go awry. See if you can spot what happened.

    The underwear post on the blog fits me to a T, actually I guess no fitting is involved. LIFE IS SHORT, PLAY NAKED.

    Ah, yes. Emery Carl. He was one of the first people I met in Seattle. You can find lots more at his website I think: http://www.thetroubadourshow.com/EmeryCarl.html

    And personally I always liked that his shoes got in on the act too. http://only-a-phlizz.deviantart.com/art/shakers-116089073Don’t know if the shaker bits have a proper name though.

    @Flight Suit

    Since it comes from Latin, I would say “octopedes” would be a good guess. In fact, if you Google that word, you’ll find it!-————————————————————————————————————

    Close enough that you get the cigar! The actual word should be “octopodes,” rather than “octopedes,” but I lack the authority or expertise to say with certainty that one is better than the other.

    Gah. Sorry about the dead link on the Disney video, that’s the one I was referring to, anyway.
