Some people leave their dogs outdoors all year round. Why bother having a dog?

    Good Morning, Crew!

My German Shapard didn’t mind winter. Hated summer. Smarter than my children, at times.

It depends on the location and the dog and the current weather. Right now, it’s pretty mind here.

When I lived in Texas, I kept my dog outside all year. However, the dog had a very nice doghouse which he could get under when the summer was too hot – also plenty of trees in the yard. The only weather he didn’t like was thunderstorms, so he always got to come in for those. Cold didn’t bother him because he was a Husky mix.

Dogs bred for the cold – huskys, etc – prefer the out door when it’s cold, and the indoors when it’s warm. If you leave your husky inside during the summer, is that considered animal abuse? I think it would be (especially, if you don’t have a/c).

Anyway, Morning Crew! Good PSA by Mr. Chip today.

I figure there’s only 2 reasons to have a dog. A critter to love and cherish (that unconditional love is a huge high) or to protect the house and its occupants – or a combination of the two. And neither can be accomplished if the dog is kept outside all the time.

Okay, there is the exception of dogs that are bread for winter, like Huskies or Malamutes that really aren’t comfortable inside.

Sorry about the soap box thing. Our local news just carried a story about a 12 year old dog left out in a cold shed starving. The vets said if he had not been found, he’d have die in days. He’s doing okay now.

Wish we could send Nate over to educate that dog’s owners…

I remember Nate tearing the door of a car to let out a dog that was trapped in the hot sun. Good for Nate.

Of course if it was Scratch outside, everyone would be inside laughing.

Thank you Chip. Truer words were never spoken. My Pooh was outside 8 years but she was a retriever/chow/shepard mix that LOVED being outside. She had a good life outdoors; an insulated dog house and plenty of attention from the family. She got to go many places with me, on walks, places where we would let her run loose and get all the penned up energy out of her. She wasn’t put out there and forgotten. In the summer, in the heat of the day, we’d have her come in a/c house and she’d go to the basement and sleep in the shower and in the evenings we’d hose her house down to make it cooler for her. She was definately one of the family.

My triple coated, 75 pound Antolian Shepherd is miserable inside! Not not only because of his thick fur, but he gets jangly nerves after about 5 minutes inside. Samson lives to patrol & guard our acreage. He gives great walkies & is friendly with other dogs.

The word PET implies that extraordinary care will be given to the creature given that title. If extraordinary care is not given, the creature is not a pet, but a prisoner.

Our dog always wears a sweater under her coat when it is really cold. She also wears boots to protect her feet from the cold and salt. She wears a t-shirt when the floor is cool in our apartment which keeps her warm. At night she sleeps with her own blanket covering her up to her neck. She is 12 1/2 years old and we treat her like one of the family. Because she IS a member of our family! :)

Funny thing about Gal, the vets could NEVER figure out why he only used 3 legs, there was no damage to that fourth leg, and boy, was he FAST! He could run like the wind!

Why would anyone get a dog, or any kind of animal meant to be a companion, then not make it part of their family? Makes no sense!
