Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for December 04, 2011
Transcript:
Stephan: This guys complaining to the newspaper about the amount of swearing in our comic strip. Pig: What did we say? Stephan: Rat called someone a '@*#&#*@ idiot'. Rat: That's not swearing. Stephan: How do you figure? Rat: '@*#&#*@' means 'lovable'. I just use the squiggles because I'm embarrassed to use the 'L' word. Stephan: So you were just calling someone a 'Lovable idiot'? Rat: Of course. What did the reader think '@*$#*@' meant? *psst psst* Rat: If you'll excuse me. I'll be washing out my virgin ears and weeping. Pig: Want to hold my @*#&#*@ teddy bear?

What he said…
rf_eq almost 13 years ago
Rat’s well intentioned grawlix was misunderstood as Maledicta.
bahramthered almost 13 years ago
Since rat has shown so much cowardice when confronted with the only female rat on the strip I think I belief him. He is a virgin.
Hillbillyman almost 13 years ago
This strip is so &^%#ing funny.
P-B almost 13 years ago
I don’t understand why Rat won’t use that ♦#ʬ#♦ word.
Sluggomatic almost 13 years ago
Pearls always has a great use of grawlix.
Sisyphos almost 13 years ago
Shame on you, Pig, exposing your teddy bear to such gutter language! Of course, the original complainant (panel 1) is a filth-mongering hypocrite.
chris_weaver almost 13 years ago
You made Rat blush!

Well…. ya know….. it just might have something to do with loving…… very close loving.
Rat wanted to love the idiot very closely.
eddie6192 almost 13 years ago
Never mind what Pastis and Rat inferred with their squiggling, I’m wondering what Pig meant with his squiggles in the last panel.

Normally, I hate rat, but today, he’s pretty funny. Needed a good chuckle, too. Thanks!
Ooten Aboot almost 13 years ago
Good catch rf_eq. Pastis should submit this one to Wiktionary to illustrate their entry for grawlix.
walruscarver2000 almost 13 years ago
And today Rat is working as a spin doctor for a presidential candidate.
abaffuto almost 13 years ago
While grawlix usually indicates swearing or a swear word, the severity of said swear word is up to the readers own imagination. That being said, I don’t think I understand pig enough to know what he is saying in the last panel! @#*#!
celeconecca almost 13 years ago
of course. should have known that.
hoolman almost 13 years ago
That is now my favorite.

There is some truth in that we rarely consciously confront what we mean when we say certain things. Also when I was in the service I noticed that nobody really SWORE…they just repeated the same sounds that everybody else said.
So I figured out and patterned a about thirty seconds’ worth of swearing nobody else had ever heard. I made sergeant in a week.

This strip is so #$*#@$( funny!

The real world is NEVER as filthy as the self righteous and sanctimonious make it out to be. I say, &@^# ’em.

In one of his commentary books, Stephan explained how he had to switch his swear words a bit more vague, since things like “#$@%ing” is too suggestive. And stuff like @$$ is right out.
Sherlock Watson almost 13 years ago
Rat is the master of ©*#§#*© sarcasm.
TheSpanishInquisition almost 13 years ago
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Pig swear since “$#%& British Petroleum”.
killacowinWA almost 13 years ago
Pig is asking if anyone wants to hold him lovable teddy bear. I should think that would be obvious.

Is it possible Rat has Tourettes?
alviebird almost 13 years ago
This highlights a point that I frequently make. People make assumptions based on how they themselves would act. For example: If you assume that someone will (or did) steal, lie, or just take unfair advantage, then it may be because you would steal, lie, or take unfair advantage.
Snoopy_Fan almost 13 years ago
You do that, if it makes you feel better…
JT King Jayrod almost 13 years ago
That just goes to show how readers only fan the flames of the writers imagination lol
Little Boss almost 13 years ago
Rat called someone a pompous idiot. Pastis used 7 symbols. Is that what this reader is talking about? I wonder what he thinks pompous means. I can only imagine.
ArtCreator almost 13 years ago
LOL. My virgin ears know a few words Stephan might had said.
LunaNovequill almost 13 years ago
Gasp The teddy bear has been subject to foul language and is now “dirty”.

I always wondered why the -ing is censored. It’s cause it is -ble, not -ing!

Never assume. It makes… well, you know.
