I had one of my cats proudly arrive through the front door with a bird in its mouth. I squeezed the cat’s jaws open and the bird flew right out. I have indoor cats now.
We had a Siamese cat many years ago who brought home someone’s escaped parakeet. When I took the bird from his mouth, the bird turned his head and bit my thumb. Talk about “angry birds”,. ;-D

I’ve never understood this problem though. Birds can fly. Cats can’t.

“decimate” means “reduce by 10%” I’m sure it’s more than that.
