I love the name Miss Wormwood! It reminds me of my junior high Home Ec teacher, Mrs. Witherspoon. (No kidding) And yes, she was tall and thin, gray and wrinkled. And also a very nice lady and great teacher. : )
Sigh, in today’s school, Calvin might be arrested, or at least sent in for psychiatric counseling and deemed a menace to society. Still, I love the concept and Calvin’s imagination.
@Johnny Diego: public schools in NY still have an art requirement, but “woodshop” has been modernized. In our school, it’s engineering or computer-assisted design, etc.
I was in 3rd grade in 1964- the height of Beatlemania. I was drawing a picture of the Beatles, on stage, with their instruments. Like Calvin, I was quite pleased at how well it was coming out. Suddenly the teacher descended, whipped it away, and that was the last I saw of it. I saw her many years later and mentioned it. She didn’t remember that specific incident, but she remembered me well enough to believe me. She kind if apologized (though she would most likely do it again…) To this day I wonder if it was really any good, or just looked good through my 8 year old eyes. I never had a chance to sit back and study it, it was gone so fast.
I wonder if in reality Miss Wormwood is in only in her early 30s, not near retirement age. Maybe it’s just the challenge of dealing with Calvin that she appears to be older.
Love Calvin’s imagination.Where I live in Southern California, art is still pretty big in the schools. We have art shows displaying great elementary, high school and community college art in all mediums. My grandkids are arty so I hope it doesn’t go away.
Yep, that’s what my notebooks looked like through college. They never took them because I always got A’s. At the end of the year, I threw out the notes but saved the drawings.
this is so cute! I had horrible penmanship, but doodled good and was good in art. Other kids would ask me to draw stuff for them and one offered criticism of my handwriting.
At community college I would doodle cats during Conversational Spanish. The teacher was upset until I gave a class presentation with cartoon cats and Spanish word balloons. It was just “my process”.
You can tell it’s old. Today this would make the news and Calvin would be sent to a psychiatrist to dope him up on meds. Can’t take chances on children who doodle.
…miss wormwood has probably been teaching since calvin’s grandparents were in school…as a result, she has seen this type of behaviour plenty, rolls off her like water off a duck’s back- she probably even recognises and appreciates calvin’s genius, but it’s still her job to teach him…probably her calling, actually…

I had one whipped off my desk and hung up on the cork strip right above the blackboard. It was a huge camel with Mrs Baumann’s face. Oops.

Exactly what I was thinking. “Zero tolerance” would get him expelled and sent to an alternative school.

Mrs. Wormwood’s hide must be made of solid neutronium. There’s no known way of blasting through it.
The idea of Calvin in a real tank would scare me though.
Jim Bedsole Premium Member about 12 years ago
Today this would be taken as evidence of another Columbine or Va Tech and Calvin would be sent to juvenile prison, not detention.

“I was reminded of that old limrick about the ‘Purple Cow’ myself.”
Not quite a limerick – just four lines:
“I never saw a purple cow.I never hope to see one.But I can tell you anyhowI’d rather see than be one.”
Gillette Burgess wrote it, as well as an exasperated follow up:
“Confession: and a Portrait Too, Upon a Background that I Rue"
“Ah, yes, I wrote the ‘Purple Cow’—I’m sorry, now, I wrote it;But I can tell you anyhowI’ll kill you if you quote it!”
