Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for March 16, 2012
Transcript:
Goat: Steph, what the #*@! is this East Coast/West Coast cartoonists' feud? Pastis: Syndication's a rough business, Goat, so every few years, cartoonists from the East Coast fight alongside their characters against all of us West Coast guys and all of our characters. Goat: But we don't have Guard Duck right now... what West Coast characters do we have that can make up for that? ... Shoot me now.

Those two might actually come in handy, Steph; if you want to know if the coast is clear, just make Dolly or Cathy stand up, and see what happens.

Lucy Van Pelt is a West Coaster. The East better sue for peace FAST!

Yikes! I live in Santa Rosa. This town is crawling with toons.
If LGD comes back from Tibet, I even have to worry about friendly fire.Though we do have all the Peanuts gang, and Brenda Starr…. and Jane, who just saved the planet!
Luann is a West Coaster, and Wiley used to be, but I don’t think he is any more. Too bad — Danae might be useful.
Still… maybe we’ll be OK…. MythTickle isn’t well known, but it’s a Santa Rosa toon — and some of the characters are magical.
And Rayannina is right — Lucy is a force to be reckoned with…. and don’t forget Snoopy, the Flying Ace!

The east coast has Bucky Katt. The west coast is doomed.

any chance this fighting war is just a passing phase? I like it when it’s the Crocks & Zebra, Little Guard Duck and the passers-by…These strips are written 6 months in advance… please wake me up when it’s over. I need a peaceful outlook… Comics + war is an oxymoron to me.
Sisyphos over 12 years ago
I know the outlook is bleak, Goat. But try to hold out until LGD gets back with reinforcements (Mr. Snuffles, the flying gunship kitty). Maybe you can use Dolly and Cathy as human shields and briefly confuse those evil East Coast cartoonists and characters….

Cathy and the girl from Family Circus? What’s her name, Dolly, Dotty? I think it’s a D name, stopped reading Family Circus long before I discovered Pearls casue I just got tired of it. If it wasn’t for Pastis doing Jeffy strips so much I wouldn’t remember his name. Goat’s right, doomed!!!!
And does this mean Goat’s German? The looks like a WWI era German Army helmet. Maybe he’s secretly a biker.

Don’t know what coast she is on, I think maybe in the midwest, but that used to be the west when the USA was still wet behind the ears. Stephanie MacMillan in her “Minimum Security” cartoon has a one eyed rabbit who makes bombs, a well armed and crazy German drug dealer, and a few rabid revolutionaries. They would be better assests than a little kid with a doll and a has been cartoon character who would only be of marginal use if she had a chic outfit to fight in. The only down side to the Minimum Security bunch is that you would probably have to agree to help stomp out capitalism and serve vegatarian REMs to the troops. Of course there is always Drusila from Pibgorn – a succubus could do some serious damage to the other side.

Yesterday….Pig with a Slurpee..Today…Goat with a Prussian helmet (with horn modifications)
Ermine Notyours over 12 years ago
I was told the false rumor for the spike on the helmet was for doing head butts. Goats are known for doing head butts, thus the spike on the helmet.Bil Keane is from Arizona. They’re in our time zone now because they don’t do DST, so they’re west cost.

Camp Swampy is on the East Coast, isn’t it? With Beetle on that side, the West Coast should be pretty safe.

I was gonna say that it’s worse than they know: Cathy retired, and they had some strips of her ghost hanging around. Even a frustrated ghost is not going to be very effective against bullets and explosions.

alaskajohn1 over 12 years ago
I guess Alaska would be considered West Coast. I’ll bring an A-10; that should solve the problem once and for all.

I sent a letter to Marin IJ congratulating them for putting PBS in 7 days a week….This follow up letter appeared yesterday….No LOL for this idiot! We gotta get him, Steph!!
“As an audience of one, I must protest the inclusion of cartoonist S. Pastis’ “Pearls Before Swine” in the comic section.
I should have protested when it was first included in the Sunday section, but its inclusion in the IJ every day is no longer tolerable.
Earlier this week a reader wrote praising the strip.
I am still trying to determine whether the reader was truly appreciative or being as sarcastic as Pastis tries to be.
The best thing I can say of the strip is that it is totally devoid of humor. The strip portrays violence as the answer to all situations and that violence is somehow humorous.
The March 13 strip is a prime example.
Additionally, the strip seems to think that profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity, as evidenced by its constant and consistent use of symbols such as # and @, is humorous.
Finally, for today anyway, I find the language, syntax, and thought patterns of the “croc” characters demeaning, if not racist.
The crocs are used by Pastis to show that any individual, or group of individuals, should be laughed at or made fun of because their mental capacities, accent and language use are in some way less or different from our own.
Please remove this offensive strip from the IJ and take a good look at “Get Fuzzy” by D. Conley for the same reasons."

I’m sorry to say I’m an East Coaster, and almost as close as you can get. :P (I live in a humungous district in south eastern PA that no one’s ever heard of) Sorry Steph. I’m sad to say that I’ll have to pick up my M16 and join the ranks of my east coast comrades. I’m also sad to say that it looks like the West is gonna lose this war- we’ve got Calvin and Hobbes, Bucky Katt, Steve Dallas, Milo Bloom, Quiche Lorraine and Bobby Harlow, Bill the Cat, Opus, Michael Binkley, Major Bloom, all the other boarders at Bloom Boarding House, the Donnesbury characters (don’t feel like listing them all), Camp Swampy (that means Sarge!), and many many other people. But then again, you West Coasters have Lucy Van Pelt, Snoopy, FoxTrot, Non Sequitor (Danae is quite the character), and Edge City as well! But still, we have Calvin and Hobbes! Surrender or be defeated by a six year old boy and his stuffed tiger who happen to be evil maniacs/geniuses and pyromaniacs. This is not a fair fight.
