“…They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” (Isaiah 2:4 NKJV) May these words become reality one day and that that day be closer than we imagine.
Aaron, it’s a great strip as always, especially today. I can’t wait to see the rest of the story arc. It reminds me of some of my own struggles, even though I have never served in the military. Good Job!!!
Thanks to you dbig, my brother in arms. I never carried a rifle, my weapons were two 5 inch guns and and a couple of VLS nests full of standard missiles and tomahawks. We had little to fear from those we were shooting at. Our concerns were mines, attack aircraft and scuds potentially full of chemical weapons. Though I never kicked down a door, we were shown imagery of the damage we inflicted, and I am not naive enough to think that there were no people in those buildings we leveled. Seeing the carnage in person is undoubtably a vision of hell itself, but not witnessing the reality allows the immaginaton to fill in all manner of possible results, none of which are pleasant to dwell on. I pray our friend Wally finds peace as he faces down the demons who haunt his past.
Wife, girlfriend, sister, mother?Doesn’t really matter, she is a loved one who brings Wally out of his complacency to awareness of what he is doing.Sometimes enlightenment hurts.
I do believe Wally’s world IS about to change. He’s openned up and let his guard down. Now, he’s (potentially) about to get hit square in the face with the reality of what he really did – if that is in fact Holly.
I always thought that the President should have two pictures on the wall of the oval office. One would be of one of the burned out cities at the end of WWII. The other would be from a concentration camp. The first to remind him why you don’t want to fight a war. The second to remind him that some times you have to.
Oh, yeah, thanks DAD. Darn, I am getting older. . .losing my memory I guess. Or maybe just so used to the cliffhangers I grabbed for the worst thing I could think of. So……poor Wally probably did something to this woman or at least saw close up what Apex did to her and, yeah, it’s probably bad.
I’ve been thinking Holly reminds me a little of of Arlene Golonka, who I thought was a cutie as a kid when she played Millie on “Mayberry RFD” back in the late 60’s.
One of the biggest problems with locals in these sort of situations is that, even under the best of circumstances, there are going to be some who object to your presence. They unfortunately appear no different from the friendlies, often crossing family lines. One member of a family (say a daughter) could find herself attracted to a young soldier among the occupiers; while another (say a son) is a member of the insurgents/resistance. Then one day, a team of soldiers storms the house looking for the son and in the process the whole family is killed. Imagine the pain when the young soldier, who just happened to be part of the team, finds his new love has been caught in the crossfire. Not saying that’s the case here, but it’s one of a million possibilities…

If that’s Wally’s silhouette in the last panel, he has much handsomer ears now :-)

One moment fire, the next moment ice. It looks like Wally (assumed) is visiting the cold graves of the families hurt in the firestorm.

Too much war, too much hate. too much killing. And the sabers are rattling.
