Spaghetti Face is disturbingly reminiscent of this image which I screen-capped from some old horror movie trailer. I’m sorry to say I can’t remember which movie it’s from.
I have always been under the impression that those small hinged containers were indeed pillboxes. My parents collected antiques and they had several of them. I think that they might also have been used in some cases as snuff boxes.
Sigh, those shells make me nostalgic for the beaches of Englewood Florida. Shells just like those were abundant on the beaches there as were fossil shark’s teeth. Sanibel/Captiva are more famous but Manasota Key is also a great beachcombing place. We spent a lot of time there in the winter when I was growing up. Mom and dad retired there. Depending on your screen size, two places they lived may be on the map, Grove City in the south (or just off the map to the south) and Overbrook Rd to the north (or just off the map to the north, they lived on a canal in Overbrook Gardens).
Patch boxes were used for storing the tiny black patches that ladies and gentlemen of fashion in the 18th century used to call attention to a particular facial feature, such as eyes, or mouth.
Also, I saw the movie “Oyster Farmer” . It was ok, but I watched it mainly to see what the depiction of the oyster farmer was in Australia and how it compared to farming here in California.
When I was very young (long, long ago, and in a galaxy far, far away), one of my most beloved books was Scuppers the Sailor Dog by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Garth Williams. A simple story of a sailor dog with a bit of an identity crises, the illustrations charmed me then, and continue to do so now.
“Knock Loudly, I’m Home” made me think of this charming story at once. Thanks for the memories.
The shooting of Trayvon shows how individuals with the assumption of authority can overreact. It is great when citizens take on roles to aid the police, but law enforcement wannabes can get wrapped up in their assumed authority and I believe a small percentage of them have a personality that compels them to want to seek out and create such situations. I have noticed a surly confrontational attitude applied at border crossings and amongst the police themselves. Such professions can attract individuals who have aggressive personalities, people seeking out an occupation that allows them to bully.

Sure, you bet. If my building is on fire you can just bet I am going to set off that alarm. I’ll patiently await my eventual release.

@APOI: A wonderful announcement. I wonder how daring UUClick will be with some of Kliban’s edgier stuff? If they’re not, I certainly can be…
