Oh, come on, somebodyshort, although I’ve always resented math because I’m crappy at it, the one thing I liked about it was that there really is only one answer. Now you come along and snatch that away………Thanks a lot Bro….

Who decided that a minus x a minus = a plus and what was the reasoning behind it? It was never explained satisfactorily at school (nothing was). If you can enlighten me, please use simple language – I’m very tired.

If Danae stalls long enough, the teacher may let her leave just to get her out of there!!

i knew there would be some folks who’d chime in to inform us that some math problems have more than one answer. Keep in mind the context of the character and the setting here. Danae is a 9 year old girl…in elementary school. Math problems at that level (addition and subtraction for the most part) have only one answer.

    Teachers can’t send kids to the principle’s office anymore? That’s different . . .

My pedantic gland is acting up today, so…second panel: politics, religion, race, gender…these are areas where most people jump to preconceived conclusions without examining variables and possibilities…however, one can never know all the variables or possibilities, so all of us are forced at some point to choose an answer we can consider “right” until more information becomes available. Whew! Gotta get some pills for that pedantic gland!

Wrong. The square root of 4 is 2. When there is no minus sign in front of the square root sign, it is to be seen as requesting the positive square root. However, if the original question was worded as “x^2 = 4, what is x?” then the answer would be 2 or -2.

What is the square root of 4? 2 and negative 2. That is one answer. 2 or negative 2 would be two answers.

If you believe math can have many answers…try to explain that to my bank and get rid of those overcharges!

Any teacher worth his / her salt would simply move on after the first five to ten seconds. For example: “I’ll come back to you when you’re ready, Danae”

Give Danae a homework assignment to demonstrate a school-level math problem with more than one provable answer.

Sheldon gives those of us who really do have Asperger’s a bad name. He’s a stereotype of the disorder in its extreme. Like it isn’t hard enough for people to truly understand us without that guy mucking it up?!

    .

Danae, that’s not genius. It’s stalling. It’ll just make you look that much dumber when you do, or don’t, answer.
