Roger: They're having steel drum music down at the beach. Andy: Is it real, or fake like everything else here? Roger: Will you stop beating up on this place?! You won't have a moment of fun on this trip if all yo uno is look for things to criticize! See?! It's a real guy playing the synthesizer! Man: Whoops. Sorry I didn't mean to hit bagpipes just then.

Oh, look, Roger, your wife’s eye is happily twitching again! She must REALLY love this vacation!

At least she is HAVING vacation. My husband & I haven’t been able to go on a vacation since 2004 (and that was traveling to see his family).

I still half speculate Roger does things like this specifically to get back at Andy for being such a… Debbie Downer.

I really can’t believe that, before they married, he was some sort of cool, competent guy who might actually develop a real life. It’s not possible that he just suddenly became worthless. So she knew what he was like, and she married him anyway, which makes her a serious pathological case, because she could only have done it for the purpose of looking down on him forever.

Gosh! The number of people critical of Andy for not liking this lame vacation… (1) it’s just a cartoon – these people aren’t real folks! (2) to those who claim she knew what he was like before she married him – people often change and change A LOT during the course of a marriage. There’s a reason for the saying, “The honeymoon is over”. If the person you’re dating has ADHD or any other sort of issues of the like – the change can be dramatic – from someone sweeping you off your feet in a whirlwind of romanticism to completely ignoring you. (3) Having kids often changes a marriage dramatically. (4) People change over time – sometimes into completely different people. The difference between a marriage that is successful and one that isn’t – is whether the people involved change in such a way that they can grow together, rather than growing apart. I can relate to the person who was saying that she hadn’t been on a real vacation in forever and a day though… for us, the last “real” vacation was in 2006.

I like FoxTrot for the non-Andy strips and for the geek jokes. Every storyline like Andy-takes-away-the-coffee and Andy-won’t-cook-turkey-for-Thanksgiving just grates on me the longer and longer it goes on. Yes, it’s “just a cartoon” but it would be a lot funnier without focusing on her. She’s still a wonderful ray of sunshine and jellybeans compared to Ellie Patterson, though.

Roger just can’t take a hint that Andy is pissed with him, can he?

I would be a bit more blunt. I would say whereever you go, there you are. So deal with it.

The thing that makes a comic strip funny is the ability to somewhat identify with the characters and/or the situation. And sometimes it’s even funnier when it’s taken to an extreme, as this obviously is.
In many households the wife/mom remains the only adult, while everyone else cuts loose. (It’s like being the designated driver.) Andy’s disappointment began when she thought they would be going on the vacation she always wanted and it wouldn’t be fair to Roger to conclude that he is absolutely incapable of doing something right.
