It’s a comic strip. If you want death and serious injury, you are in the wrong place.

It is not a cop out ending. Heart coming to Dean’s rescue was totally expected—the only question was how and if it would be effective.

The ending could not have been much better. The Spumanti brothers will live to bully again and Heart and Dean will be ready for them.

In this case, the resolution is actually perfect. Dean put himself in danger to distract the bullies, allowing Heart time to go back and get his water cannon. In other words, they worked together to outsmart the pair.

The bullies are now in an unpleasant situation: they can either withdraw and admit to having been outsmarted, or they can attack Dean but at the cost of getting drenched.

Either way, someone has finally stood up to them, and so now the whole block will know that the Spumanti Brothers can be beaten.

That’s right: often times, the best way to shut down a bully is to remind them that they aren’t at the top of the food chain.
