I remember a girl in college who at 19, was so well tanned she looked like a catcher’s mitt with a face.

That we Americans with European ancestry think tanned skin looks better than pale skin is a cultural thing, and has changed over time. In pre-industrial times, Europeans thought pale skin looked better. The fictional Snow White was considered beautiful partially because of her extremely pale complexion.

Crystal is so much better looking than Tiffany (not to mention miles smarter), But Tiff is really selling it as though she were, well, selling it….

And I wouldn’t be surprised if it is Crystal (not Tiffany) whom the guys think is “hot” (but it would be one UNPLEASANT one for Tiff, kind of like when she found out what “abrogated” means).

My older sister tanned all the time both in the sun and on tanning beds well into her 20’s. She’s 45 now and has a face covered in small freckles from skin damage and has a scar on her lip where a spot of skin cancer had to be removed. She now says that she really regrets all the tanning she did when she was young.

I never had any desire whatsoever to tan when I was a teen. Besides not being interested in going to that much expense just to “look good”, I didn’t want to damage my skin or get cancer. Both of my parents, my sister, and one of my uncles have all had skin cancers removed since my father’s side of the family is Norwegian-Swede and my mother’s side is basically a “potluck of pasty” from all over Europe. We don’t tan — we burn!

So if tanned skin is so attractive, what’s the attraction of tan lines? And BTW, where’s Tiff’s tan lines?

I do like the Goth look. I also can’t stand the Kardashians. However, I think Crystal would look really striking if she stopped chopping her hair, and let it grow long. She’d have that Goth-raven beauty. :)

You hear a while ago about that lady who was brought up on charges that she was bringing her daughter to the tanning place? All she needs now is the lines to go along with her pumkin face, :D

They don’t like prunes, but all they care about is NOW anyway, not “in a few years.” I’m not sure why the fashion for tanned skin arose and stuck around the way it did. Usually fashions go in cycles.

The two parts those guys most want to see and fiddle with are not tan, my dear. And the part they don’t want to fiddle with isn’t tan either — your brain, which has never seen the light of day…

I have fair skin, so I have to wear sunscreen when I got outside, especially during the summer, and both my arms and hands do get tanned. Personally, if I was going to be tanned 24/7, I’ll use tanning lotion instead of something that can cause cancer.

The guys Tiffany wants to marry would probably dump her for a young trophy wife when she turns into a prune, so she’ll end up lonely and miserable anyway.

Crystal is more intelligent [a fence post is more intelligent] but where is the defining proof that sunlight in moderation causes skin cancer? Or that sunscreen doesn’t cause problems? How many other products that were touted as the greatest thing have been shown to cause great health concerns? Think DDT or Thalidomide.Besides, a little bit of coloring looks much nicer than pasty white.

Tiffany has the goods alright. However a body is a terrible thing to waste (on a feeble mind). Much more interesting – Crystal’s skirt looks shorter in the last frame compared to the first frame.

Once while working in The People’s Republic of Angola, a friend asked why I went to the beach during lunch break. I explained I wanted dark skin like his. He held up his extremely dark arm beside my pale pink arm, shook his head and explained to me, “You will never succeed, my friend.” I enjoyed the pity in Mata’s voice.

I went to college with a girl who loved to maintain a deep tan year round (this was in Edmonton, AB, where a tan in winter is definitely NOT natural). At 21 she was diagnosed with a serious skin cancer. She survived, but it was an eye-opener for me that sometimes delayed consequences aren’t even delayed much.
