So, did Calvin put himself up there dangling from the tree branch? Or did he imagine that Hobbes did it? Or…….Neither one. The only possible explanation that even begins to make perfect sense is that Hobbes becomes alive when he is alone with Calvin.
There was a dumb six-year-old guyWho kept throwing rocks at the sky‘Til one hit a nestWith more bees than he’d guessedAnd his friend left him hung out to dry
@SUSAN NEWMAN: Actually, the old strips that I post are stored on GoComics. On my computer I save searchable information about the strips (thousands of them), but when I display a comic here, I do it by posting the GoComics link.
Mom finds Calvin hanging on a tree branch with no shirt. Asks for an explanation and gets a story about rocks and hornet nests, and Hobbes protecting himself by sacrificing poor Calvin. Makes perfect sense.
Does not take long for a boy to learn two things about these so called bugs they are usually the right height to poke with a stick or throw stones at no 2 when mad these things travel faster than the speed of sound .
Bill Watterson said in the “Calvin and Hobbes 10th anniversary book”. Page 22.“The so called “gimmick” of my strip-the two versions of Hobbes-is sometimes misunderstood. I don’t think of Hobbes as a doll that miraculously comes to life when Calvin’s around. Neither do I think of Hobbes as a product of Calvin’s imagination. The nature of Hobbes’s reality really doesn’t interest me, and each story goes of its way to avoid resolving the issue. Calvin sees Hobbes one way, and everyone else sees Hobbes another way. I show two versions of reality, and each making complete sense to the participant who sees it. I think that’s how life works. None of us see the world in exactly the same way, and I just draw that literally in the strip. Hobbes is more about subjective nature of reality than about dolls coming to life."Sorry for the long post! : )
@orinoco womble (from yesterday),Your point is well taken, but I was thinking in terms of the recent situation in Greece where there were protests and some rioting because of the proposed government austerity measures to cut spending, etc. to be able to meet government financial obligations. Since Spain seems to be “socialist”, and taxes have been increased (not necessarily the best remedy during a recession), entitlements will have to be reduced, and other measures taken to make the government solvent, don’t the people have to elect leaders who are willing to do what is necessary, and don’t the people have to “bite the bullet” so to speak, which is especially difficult when there is 25% unemployment. The USA is heading for ultimate financial disaster as well with “unrestrained” government spending.Well, I wish you well no matter what happens!
Anyone remember the Farside cartoon of the hornet’s nest outside the picture window, and the hornets were throwing rocks at the window?“And the two species coexisted until one day——”
I’d be mad, too, if Calvin spent all morning throwing rocks at my house! And when (not if!) I caught him, I’d make his little fanny hurt worse than any hornet sting with the spanking I’d give him on his bare bottom!!! I’d probably be arrested for “assaulting” the little juvenile delinquent . . . but it would be worth it!!!!!
WOW! We have a bad reaction in common, but my story isn’t that good. When about 5 yrs old, the next door neighbor kid (named Wayne) took one of my toys. I chased him around our adjoining houses. He ran between a tree and the metal fence rail, kicking the fence. I followed. The hornets/wasps/bees – whatever they were – that lived inside that fence rail flooded out and caught me. I don’t remember anything after that except waking up in the hospital in an oxygen tent.Since then, on the occasions when I accidentally got stung (avoid them like the plague) – say on the hand – my arm from the elbow down would swell and I would get a bad flu-like allergy. Medication time.Isn’t life just so grand?!?!?

It looks like, very soon, the hornets will get together with Calvin and find a way to make ends meet.

Tigers and Yellow Jackets have similar coloring….I think they’re distant cousins. Hobbes was just “sticking up” for family.

@aicarrie1,When Calvin told Hobbes about the hornets, he ‘went out on a limb’!
