Sadly, a very good point — though more of a sad commentary on the maturity of the viewing public …

Who is he trying to kid…

The movie industry today gets all kinds of state and local government incentives and breaks to shoot at different places. In 1948 the DOJ finally broke up the studio monopoly with an anti-trust suit. That’s free market?

    Just sayin…

There are so few good, much less great, comedies, that it seems to be the most difficult type of movie to make. Drama’s are easy……

    Fairportfan2.

The actual quote is, “No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.”

Mencken made it in 1926. What it was shortened down to is equally accurate.

I’m fine with no government regulations as long as the stake holders are managing their market in a constructive way. It’s the destructive race-to-the-bottom manufacturers and retailers I think that need the “thou shalt not cross this ethical line” rules.

oh come on! Adam Sandler is hilarious. Little Nicky is one of the greatest stupid movies there is – you have to laugh that you’re wasting your time watching it! and the Wedding Singer is one of the best all time movies ever. I’d rather watch a bad Adam Sandler movie over a war movie any day.

And yet, Adam Sandler is the 3rd highest paid actor in Hollywood. It’s irrelevant how many people here like him. He doesn’t get that much money by appealing to some small subset. He entertains, he doesn’t make art, and that’s what Hollywood is at it’s core, entertainment, and nothing else.

Actually the point of this strip is that businesses don’t want government regulations, claiming they are not necessary…anyone remember Enron and housing debacle? Some regulations are essential.

You can make a movie that brings in 2 million people and racks up high for a weak week in Oct. or Mar. and you are a success, while the other 298 million in the country don’t know your name. ‘Real Housewives of the Jersey Storage Wars Go House Hunting with Celebrities" on The Discover Hallmark Channel will be a "huge " success if it out pulls the “Lucy” reruns on Antenna TV. The standard for success is now if an 18-35 year old will buy the junk you push or rent your DVD. It has nothing to do with real popularity or Harry’s Law would still be on the sinking NBC network: most popular show: lousy demographic with the kids.

I don’t think the rating system for movies is run by the government. The Rating Board is composed of people from various parts of the movie industry. That was done to avoid having the government do it, if I remember correctly.

Adam Sandler movies are generally so awful. That’s why Spanglish was such a surprise. He was really good in that. But infantile jokes seem to be the moneymakers.

“Punch-Drunk Love” is the Adam Sandler movie for people who hate Adam Sandler movies. Director P.T. Anderson (“Boogie Nights”, “Magnolia”, “There Will Be Blood”) gives us the usual Adam Sandler character (immature, explosively violent, borderline psychotic) and shows us how a guy like that might function in real life. Very strange movie, sometimes funny, sometimes haunting, and occasionally very sweet.

I also like “The Wedding Singer” (it’s just so cute). Sandler can be an effective performer so long as somebody is on hand to keep him from being self-indulgent.

1930 thru 1950 was truly the golden age for movies and movie talent. We had Gable, Tracy, Hepburn, Crawford, Davis, Cagney, Bogart, plus many others. Today we have just few pretenders.
