Not at all. If you didn’t have these things, you wouldn’t be able to use them when you had breakdowns etc. Is the average citizen permitted to have ICBMs, nerve gas, WMDs?The same responsibility is needed for all these things..Of course, you’re going to defend your “right” to bear arms but what about your right not to get killed while watching Batman.
Wow!Do some of you actually think it takes less than 24 hours for a cartoonist to submit his work, GoComics to do all the pre-processing, and the strip to appear on this site??!!
A very few more topical cartoonists, like Darren Bell, have special deals with the syndicates for a 10 to 14 day lead time, but six weeks is the average… Dunno about Wiley but Stephan Pastis works six MONTHS ahead, with special permission to insert an occasional more topical strip into the line-up two weeks before publication. This strip was probably sent to the colorist a month ago, and the page itself has been laid out for days! There’s no reasonable way to pull a strip once the page is in the hands of web services…. much less from newspapers, which, due to complicated graphical layouts and color presses, print the comics page days or weeks ahead of time, ready for news or features to be printed on the back. But sure, Wiley should have forecast an event that had nothing to do with his strip, and changed his idea, oh, say, last May or so…
Along the lines of the comic (rather than the meta-emoting), did anybody else see yesterday’s story in which the TSA arrested an airline employee for attempting to put a bomb aboard a plane?.He was setting up “John Carter” as the in-flight movie.
Comics are written and submitted weeks to months in advance. It’s too bad someone at GoComics didn’t see this and pull it from today’s line-up. This is NOT Wiley’s fault, but he’ll be the one to get the flack from it because readers are uneducated.
People, this is a “20th Anniversary” strip, probably chosen months ago, and scheduled for insertion into the current run to stretch out Wiley’s new material and get him a few weeks’ vacation. The reference is just a co-incidence.
So, a comic strip that was written 2 weeks ago about a guy who bombed on stage is in bad taste because it is the same as someone who shot up a Batman movie? God people are stupid. What next, you’re upset because it’s sunny today instead of having the good taste to be gloomy?
You and the other nutjobs saying that this should have been pulled should just keep your heads buried in sand. Even after tragedy, life goes on. If a comic strip of the bomb squad entering a comedy club reminds you of some manic shooting up a movie theater full of people ,then you should just stay locked in your basement and stop interacting with the outside world.
On the comments about the poor timing of this strip: cartoonists submit their work weeks in advance of actual publication. Miler had no way of guessing that a massacre would occur a day before this one was due for publication.
Trudeau sometimes has the same problem with his Doonesbury comics.
It’s a comic strip.“COMIC”: Humorous, funny, laughable.Stop reading meanings into them that aren’t there.
I just noticed something. It’s not the strip you’re commenting on; it’s everyone’s comments. Shut off your computer. . . Go outside of your house. . . Talk to REAL people.
For those that need an excuse to get ticked…how’s this. I think they, themselves are in very bad taste because they are selfish, self-important politically correct wanna-be’s that don’t have a life that anyone really cares about other than to complain about others to get attention. Sorta like party politicians who point fingers at others but refuse to see their own failures. Yeah, I think this hits pretty close to home. So complain about me over your hurt feelings and self-righteousness and leave Wiley and his good works alone. Have a good day =D
I imagine Wiley started squirming the minute he realized this strip was going to post the day after the Colorado shooting, but what could he do about it? It was certainly too late for print to pull it and probably GoComics as well. It’s not that it’s a bad joke, but the timing is bad, and sometimes that just can’t be helped. There’s really no fault on this one.
So…strolling through the Non Sequitur park today…noticing the respect and dignity being accorded each commenter…such a peaceful, serene place to hide from the horrors of the outside world with a little mirth and jocularity…you know, sometimes Wiley himself joins in the frivolity…wonder if he is here somewhere now, listening, thinking…sure did get handed a bomb himself by outside parties…I think I’ll go back indoors now and spend a little more time with my wife…peace ya’ll….
Something everyone can’t seem to figure out(& it’s fairly simple to do) is the fact that 98% of the things in newspapers is at LEAST 1 to 3 days old(most articles). Things that are picked up from other news services are almost always 2 to 9 days old, and most comics are usually at LEAST 7 day old. The two biggest comic syndicates usually require most strip artists to submit at least ONE week in advance.
If you choose to believe him, this is one of the reasons Berkeley Breathed decided to stop doing Bloom County. He wanted to keep current events in the strip at times, and he couldn’t do that if he was required to submit one week before publication.About the only “comics” that are allowed to produce daily are the political cartoonists, and I understand that some of those are supposed to submit multiple copies a day so the publisher can “pick & choose” for one likely to cause the least offense.
I’m sure with the case of all, or at least most of us, our hearts go out to the victims yesterday and their families that have to deal with the premature loss of a loved one. I have never been in that position and I hope I never am.
The comic, on its own, is pretty funny. We just tended to associate it with the events of yesterday, something Wiley could not have done before the events occured. As short life is, it makes sense to spend it in the best way possible, try to enjoy it while we got it, realizing others will disagree with us. So what? As long as their view doesn’t maim or kill, let them disagree.
A bomb squad doesn’t shoot anything. They defuse the bomb so it doesn’t go off. I don’t see how this relates to Colorado at all. Look at Sally Forth if you want to see one that should have been pulled.
