Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for August 09, 2012
Transcript:
Luann: "I think it's great that you want to do something big with your life, Delta" Delta: "But" Luann: "But loving someone - and being loved - that's important, too" Delta: "Sure, but I'll do that when I'm old. I want to be president while I'm young" Luann: "So you'll run the country when you're young, then find a man when you're old? Seems backwards" Delta: "Look at it this way! I'll run the country in my prime, then find a man when I need elderly care"

Seems like Delta doesn’t have much respect for men or relationships.
chireef over 12 years ago
the way i see it Delta has her priorities set like we used to think was proper for a man… truly what is right for a man can also be right for a woman… if that is what they wish for… justly so if a man wished to get married young and stay at home becoming a househusband this should also be excepted

And yet James Buchanan never married before, during nor after his time in the Oval Office. Same thing with W.L. Mackenzie King before, during and after his three non-consecutive terms prime ministering Canada.

I’ll disagree Brdshtt (nice moniker btw) -the love of a spouse can act as a tempering agent as well as a buffer against the world. And her intent to run and be president at a young age doesn’t really project the image of someone who has actually LIVED life and learned from it -there is a REASON why these kids recently graduated from high school don’t often end up in positions of leadership at the top. It takes a LOT more than a Type A personality to become wise and well-rounded.
Hank1938 over 12 years ago
Okay, you have to be 35 to be President, puts her at 43 if she goes 2 terms. She must not plan to have any kids.

We’ve seen elta lose it over a male before. There was a youngish teacher a while ago and she was gaga over her. Her attitude is bad, and I expect it won’t last that long. If it does she’ll live a very lonely life.
Sisyphos over 12 years ago
Delta may come to regret her attitude towards work goals as opposed to relationship goals. They should not be so incompatible as she seems to believe.

Not as a rule of thumb of course, but impeccable overachievers like this in couple of years after a highschool oftentimes experience a total makeover; they end up on a street as heroin addicts, or pregnant and dumped.

I really dislike this cliched crap about ambition in women being antithetical to romantic relationships. It’s tired and nonsensical and it gets even worse when you have your main character playing the sane one for the moment and acting like the “right” choice is to choose relationships…over a career. How ridiculous to act like that’s a choice a person has to make! Having a boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife doesn’t prevent you from holding office, going to law school, etc. This conversation would make sense in my mom’s day, but not mine.

Just celebrated the 35 year dating anniversary and about to celebrate the 33 marriage anniversary. Marriage isn’t for wimps or lazy people. It would be interesting if there is a substory behind Delta that has not yet been revealed. Is there a reason why she doesn’t believe she can have love AND the career she wants? Time will tell…just like marriage. ;)Respectfully,C.

I’d vote for Luann over Delta- who wants to be president over having a life or enjoying the journey as much as the destination. In other words, a shallow narcissist. (Boring story line so far..)

WOW. So nice to know how all the smug marrieds feel about those of us who choose to remain single. I had no idea that my priorities were wrong, that there’s a huge hole in my life, and that I lack love in my life. You’ve all opened my eyes! Thank you sooooo much.
Jessy Wheeler Premium Member over 12 years ago
@Coben67- So us single folks have no idea what’s important to a family? Really? Even though we have parents and siblings and grew up in a family?
I honestly cannot believe what I’m reading here. Why do you all find the intentionally single so darn threatening?
mojitobaby over 12 years ago
I guess all of your kid’s teachers will have to be married then, because otherwise there’s no way they’ll be able to teach them anything about life today. And obviously, if you belong to a church, it can’t be Catholic, since if your clergy isn’t married there’s no way they can counsel you on family mattters “that affect us all”..What I find interesting is that you blithely assume “us all” happen to be married with families. So those of us who are single, who don’t have kids, should actually NOT vote for any married politicians with kids, since there’s obviously no way they can possibly understand OUR problems.

Given the demographic facts, Delta had better be willing to settle for whatever she can get when she goes looking for a mate that late in life. I hate to break it to ya, Delta, but the good ones will be off the market by then.

if Tiff, Delta and Luann are virgins….. I prefer the chances of Tiff and Luann resisting their hormones going wild for a guy, or at least thinking about condoms before doing it, than Delta’s…. except for the teacher a while back, and Miguel… I have never seen Delta seriously interested in someone…….. Tiff AFAIK…. has gone on many dates, but has never been serious romance wise, and has never agreed to be “friends with benefits” with anyone, and I really think Luann might have made out with Quill, but would not have gone all the way with him

Credit where credit is due. Well done Mr. Evans. He’s writing Delta like a Tiffany who pays attention in class instead of putting on her make up and has a better vocabulary. But ‘Delffany’ still just assumes she’s going to waltz into her dream jobs. A successful business career? No, she’s going to be a CEO. A(nother) career in public service? No, the Senate, then on to the Presidency! And oh, all that messy human interaction, relationship stuff? That’s for regular people, but yeah, she’ll get around to it. Cuz, you know, Mr. Perfect will always just be hanging around just champing at the bit to hook up with Wonder Delffany.I can easily see a strip no long from now with Luann and Crystal lamenting their friend who thinks they can have it all on their own not entirely realistic terms and the two of them ending with a synchronous, “Can you believe that TiffDelffanyta?” :)

Leviticus, found the book I told you about yesterday. It’s the non-evangelical “The Case for Faith” by Lee Strobel. It attempts to answer 8 objections to faith, such as “A loving God would never torture people in hell.” Take the answers for what they’re worth— they are just a good starting point for discussion. And instead of trying out Baptist & Evangelical churches, you might feel more theologically at-home at liberal Methodist or UCC churches. Or Unitarian. Or heck, do what some of us did and call houses of worship from various religions, say “Hi, I’m Bob, a religious seeker, can I come worship with you on Friday/Sat./Sun.?” That’d be especially cool to do with a Sikh community now, to show your support. And as for the story, Delta wants a stereotypical “wife” for a husband— just like we did when we were in grad school! (Instead, we all became that “wife” or stayed single.)

I think it is great that Greg is having a very young black woman aspiring to be President of the United States. If she can get her wish it would represent a color-blind and gender-blind triumph over the sexism and racism still too prevalent in America.

Can’t run the country until you are 35.
At Delta’s age she probably sees 35 as “old”. … and 43 (35 plus 8 years in office, which I am sure is her plan) is “old” for starting at dating.

Yeah, maybe in 30 years when she’s 25 (with how the aging in this comic tends to go). ;-)

you have to be AT LEAST 35 years old to be eligible to run for president, and though I’d love for the most qualified person to sit in office, the fact is that Luann had a good point yesterday, NOBODY will vote for someone who has never been in a relationship.

My Gawd – Delta’s just 16. She doesn’t know #$%* about her life five years from now. In the 60s, S, D & RNR hit the stage and steered a lot of people off course. I do hope to see Delta care about somebody in the near future. If it’s a woman – well “Better or Worse,” “CWL” and Doonesbury went there. But Delta’s story could go lotsa different ways.
ChappellGirl5 over 12 years ago
Don’t know if anyone has brought this up (too many posts to read LOL). But Delta doesn’t seem to realize that every President we’ve had, with the exception of Buchanan (who has already been mentioned) were married (and I believe they all had children) – even our youngest President. Having a husband & children give a President an escape from the incredible pressures of being the leader of the free world. The phrase “it’s lonely at the top” would be even more intense for them without their families to “come home” to. She’s definitely got her priorities backwards in her goal to be President.

I am reminded of Barbara Jordan … in an interview, being asked why she never married, she allegedly said, “I knew early on that I wouldn’t have a ‘man problem’”. Even Condi Rice has had some sort of relationship. That being said, good luck finding a guy who wants to wait until you’ve given the public your youth. Not likely.

“If they are right, Hell is going to be a very crowded place.”-Yep, you’re right. -It’s an either/or proposition and most of the world rejects it. it doesn’t mean either side is right or wrong, but it does touch on the seriousness of the matter.
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace over 12 years ago
“Humans can reduce the population by not having children or nature can do it with plague and starvation.”-All of the above are in play. Many put off having children until they are no longer fertile or simple don’t have children or have fewer children than would be required to even maintain a stable population.-There are plenty of plagues past and present, and most likely future. As people are more and more able to come in contact with each other and as biological manipulation is easier and easier, more plagues are to be expected. Further, many of the old cures are no longer working.-And most starvation so far has been politically induced, governments cutting off access to food such as has happened in Somalia, Ethiopia, USSR. But unless better production comes into play, lack of water, nutrients or simply area would be unable to keep up with even the existing population.-Oh, and you forgot WAR. War can reduce population down to near zero if done by the right/wrong people. Biological or nuclear war mostly.
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace over 12 years ago
“Therefore I believe in God, but not religion. Religion is a construct of man.”-If you believe in God but none of the teachings about Him or Her, aren’t you constructing a religion of sorts?
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace over 12 years ago
“I am not sure what the point of this is except for Delta to say she doesn’t want a man in high school. "-Many people think that what hasn’t been done can’t be done. -A black man can’t be president because a black man has never been president. -A Catholic can’t be President because a Catholic has never been President.-They believe the past predicts the future until it doesn’t.
