Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for September 01, 2012
Transcript:
Brad: "You can't ignore love, or stop it. But it takes two. Otherwise, it's just heartache" Luann: "So I should tell Quill I love him" Brad: "Yeah. And if he doesn't love you, then get over him and move on" Luann: "I see. So if Toni had picked Dirk, you'd have gotten over her and moved on?" Brad: "No. I would've wallowed in heartache. Which I did for a while. Thus, my wise advice" Luann: "You're a good older brother, Brad. You do all the dumb stuff before I do"

Why would a sister pull her brother’s tie off?
rusty gate about 12 years ago
I often have to re-do my tie. If the thinner tail section is too long, I undo and start over. Maybe that’s what Brad was doing.

Really, what do teenagers really know about love, anyway? It is mostly hormonal lust than anything. Looks like Quill has moved on already and Luann ought do the same. My boys have girlfriends and they are 19 and 20 and their relationships are not yet “we” to quote Brad. They are still important to themselves and they come first with themselves which is normal and good at their ages. Luann is too young to be thinking about love – just enjoy dating and have fun.
wild25 about 12 years ago
He’s just re-adjusting it…and is it just me or is Luanns look of big yellow hair and extremely high eyebrows getting annoying? Or do I just really want the the comic to go back to Brad and Toni/TJ and Ann?

If this was a certain snarky comic website run by one J Fruhlinger, you’d be a contender for Comment Of The Week.
Dconskjk about 12 years ago
I wish that “older brother” comment of Luann’s didn’t ring do true. If I might extend it to “older sibling” (bro or sis), my advice as an older sibling falls on deaf ears….and somehow bad experiences for me are good experiences for my younger subs

Brad the Beta Tester of the Degroot Family Business. I like it.

It’s nice to see, in a way, that Luann considers Big Brother to be a useful tool.

I’d get straight on to IMDB and claim that as a goof if I were you.

Oh, yes. Experience. So expensive to achieve. Yet practically impossible to pass on to others. Even when giving it away for free.
kfccanada about 12 years ago
It’s not unusual for a teen to take a long time to get over her first love. .especially when it wasn’t her decision to end the relationship. IMHO, if her parents allow her to phone Australia, Luann should phone Quill and see how he’s doing now that he ‘s back at home. Perhaps he’ ll be honest with her if he has moved on to another girlfriend . That would help clear away the angst if he has and she, too, can move on.
kfccanada about 12 years ago
Why is everyone so worried about the lack of absolute continuity in the strip? Perhaps it’s done on purpose to lead everyone to focus on remembering the previous strip. At one time, most cartoons were written for kiddoes who probably didn’t remember much of the previous action. Nowadays, the readers appear to be adults so little artistic licenses don’t escape them.

Why am I the first one to say this. Quill has already moved on. I would bet real money that he has already dated someone in his new hometown. This is not a criticysm of the guy. He and Luann did say goodbye, after all. But Quill is not the kind of guy to greif over an old flame for long.

Personally, I think the story arc this week has been excellent. It shows that deep down, Brad and Luann love and respect each other. In the last panel, Brad admits that he temporarily became depressed about his relationship with Toni. But, he overcame it and pursued and wooed Toni.

Okay, I Got it:
Luann’s a FLAKE and Brad is MUCH Wiser than he Looks.
NOW What???
drewpamon about 12 years ago
Heck if Luann wants advice from someone who has made mistakes before her maybe she should try her parents I’m sure they’ve made plenty.

One thing that has bothered me about this story line: Quill and his family sure left town in a big rush. I mean, here he and Luann were in her bedroom about to . . . well, something . . . and he gets a cell phone call from his father to drop everything and head home NOW! And he does. And, apparently, Quill and his family were on their way back to Australia the very next day.`Am I the only one who finds this sequence of events a tad odd? Perhaps Evans is planning a future revelation that might be somewhat scandalous in the “Luann” universe.

@Leviticus If you’re looking for a reenactment of Toni and Brad’s first time check out today’s 9 chickweed lane comic.

Luann and Brad are both overreaching, going out of their league. Let’s face it. Luann will wind up with Gunther. Brad will stay with Toni because hot women like ugly men.

Toni will not consider marriage until she actually senses competition. I would love a new character introduced, perhaps a new firefighter. Maybe not quite as hot as Toni, but is down for Brad’s dirty drawers.

Months ago I pointed out that the L/Q romance was doomed because L could not have a strong love interest. I said Q was going to go back. I suspect the relationship will turn cool or open. She has a life to lead yet. Still true.

The best time to put on cologne (or aftershave, or anything else) is right after you shower and shave, and before you dress.
Shineclan about 12 years ago
Age does not prove if you know what love is or not. I was 17 when my husband and I got together. 18 when we married. And we have been together for 16 years.
Age is nothing but a number. Love can happen in your teens, or later in life. My brother is in his 40’s and still doesn’t know what love is.

Boy some of these comments say so much about the people that make them more than what the sentiment in the strip is about. Must be a lot of unlucky people in love, sex, trust, and all the human virtues. Anyway, this is a beautiful script arc, not only between an older and younger sibling sharing experiences with each other, but with the learning and love that is both shared and talked about. This silliness about the tie and other things makes no sense, but then everyone sees visual cues differently. But I think the content says so much. Now what will happen is up to Greg Evans, but I for one hope to see a marriage, college, delta’s future possibly revealed, as well as Bernice, Gunther’s & Rosa’s and Crystal’s, & Knute’s, Tiffany’s and of course our girl Luann. I think we are about to see a gradual shift to the next level. But then……………?

Same job as an older sister – experience shared is priceless, but the young ‘uns don’t have to listen to it.

…evidently you’re not a “tie person” Levi, or you would know that NOTHING would prevent re-doing your tie if deemed necessary…especially so for a "public"person like a firefighter…Brad appears to be donning his “dress” uniform as opposed to his regular work clothes…so I suspect he is either going to a “public” function…or to a job where he will be facing the public…and therefore wants to present his best appearance…therefore tie adjusting would be de-regueur no matter what went before…besides he probably rinsed his hands off while we weren’t looking…plus there isn’t much in aftershave that would cause staining…usually it’s mostly alcohol…

People like Les Knox are less manly than they think..Okay here is what we have.Les Knox: Not manly enoughAaron: Gone to HawaiiMiguel: Gone to SpainQuill" Gone to AustraliaBen: Just goneStuart: MarriedGunther: Luann can’t be his mom.Knute: Too stupidToad Juice: Too sinisterOx: Reserved for Tiffany. So, either one of the above returns, gets divorced, grows up, gets smart, leaves the dark side, or gets rejected by Tiff. If not, there will have to be a new love interest arriving. Then again, I have said more than once that Luann and Tiffany would make a good pair..Now that last one would get the discussion board flowing big time...I think you are missing the OTP of this strip Luann and Elwood Druit

Or, as an alternative, one can wear a bow tie. (reference: my avatar)Bow ties are formal / professional / dressy enough without getting in the way. They won’t dangle over and into anything when you bend down to look, they won’t get caught in machinery, they won’t dangle into grease, and you can’t spill anything on them – at least not without a great deal of effort!Professional and practical! Bow ties!

Evans has put some pretty frank and honest comments in Brad’s mouth. His advice is easy to give, not so easy to carry out. I know. I did much the same thing as a young man of Brad’s ‘age’. Oh, and Leviticus, you are evil. Suggesting that Evans would put such a spin on Toni ..

Boy, that’s a stretch! How many Trekkies do you think will catch your reference to “Wink of An Eye”?
And at least Brad didn’t do what Letterman’s been known to do if the tail comes out too long — just take a pair of scissors to it!

If only it was as simple as telling someone. Sometimes being direct is the way to push someone away who might actually like you, because saying everything directly puts too much pressure on them or makes them feel weird.

Do as I “say,” not as I “do.” (Golly gee whiz… people expect me to use my own advice?)
