Class, we're going to have a spelling test. Why do I need to learn spelling when I have spell check? Come to think of it, why do I need to learn math when I have a calculator? Why do I need to learn geography when I have GPS? Why do I go to school at all when I have Google? Why do I teach when I should have gone into tech support?

To answer that google all the accidents that happened due to total ignorance plus total reliance on spellcheck, GPS and information on internet. That should be good for a laugh or two.

Well, for starters: its/it’s, your/you’re, there/their/they’re.
And more importantly: you need skills to back you up when the computer is down.

I’ve worked in tech support for 7 years, and it’s no great shakes. You talk with dumb people every day, every computer issue is your fault, and with all the frequent technological changes that happen, my company does not allow you to take any technical training (just soft, interpersonal crap). You have to learn it all on your own. I’d like to change jobs.

Isaac Asimov FIFTY years ago wrote a story called “The Feeling of Power” about a man, who, after only computers had been used for centuries, figured out how to make mathematical calculations by hand again and was hailed as a genius.

You can’t go into Tech Support! You speak English too well, and you aren’t from India, Sir!
