I know of a boy named Sue …Seriously, the former head of the Australian Olympic Committee was a beefy middle-aged bloke by the name of Judy Patching.Nowadays names and spelling can be all over the place.
That’s beside the point. We already agree that “Annie” is usually a short version of a female name, but T_Lexi is listing the male names that could reasonably be shortened to “Annie.”
And as I recall, “Ashley” (in all its variants), “Evelyn,” and “Shirley” were all male given names at some point or other. After all, “Ashley” was a guy in Gone With the Wind; Evelyn Waugh was a male writer; and Maury Povich’s dad Shirley Povich was a sportswriter for the Washington Post.

John Wayne’s real name was Marion. Other than Anakin, Annie could also be short for Ansel, Ansley, Anton, Anthony, Anderson, Andrew…

He obviously doesn’t know Annie either.

Not to mention Connie Mack, Rosie Greer, Babe Ruth, Doris Miller; Lafayette had Marie as one of his many names.

Woody Allen – Purple Rose of Cairo. One of the characters revolts and walks off the screen into the arms of a lonely woman.

Or another actor named Leslie Nielsen? (“and don’t call me ‘Shirley’!”)

I thought Annie was adopted, in which case it would make no sense to meet Lila’s mother. Or am I totally confused?
