Luann: "I ask you, Bernice - why am I so plain?"
Luann: "Why can't I be beautiful and popular and have a great figure? Is that asking too much?"
Bernice: "Well, yes, actually, I think it is..."
Luann: "Who's asking you?"
Oh, my gosh! Thank you!!! I haven’t commented in such a long time, and you figure out my birthday!
…
I thought you were going to say something about Luann, and I kept reading, thinking that it would be a cool coincidence to have a Luann-related event occur on the day I was born. But this is even better than I imagined. Not only do I have an entire comment concerning the day of my birth, but it’s the first comment posted on today’s page! You rock!!!
Miles, I had 4 year old, a 2 year old, and a new baby. Tiny apartment, not enough money. Now have a son-in-law, twin granddaughters, and another daughter getting married this month.
This is a great comic strip that has vastly improved with time. Mr. Evans, keep up the good work keeping us entertained! I like that there are multiple threads going on. Luann’s drama is rather tedious (just my opinion), and I prefer Brad and Toni’s story line the most. I like the way you draw the women, Greg! You have good taste. Toni is lucious, and Brad is lucky to have her as a love interest. To Donny: Chill! This is only a comic strip. ENJOY IT!
Wow I’m glad Luann went plus on the looks over time. The way she was in the third frame – I could see her twenty years later on a bar stool muttering that all guys are a……..h…….s.
Thanks, everybody, for your warm birthday wishes. Hey, Leviticus, how DID you know it was my birthday? I can’t find anywhere on here where it mentions users’ birthdates.
“Just love that lipstick on Luann DeGross, I mean, DeGroot.”I read recently that Luann was thirteen when the strip started. When I was that age, Mom had me apply lipstick tastefully and sparingly. When I got out of her sight on the way to school, however, I’d add layer upon layer of fire-engine red lipstick. Once I had to give a short presentation in school assembly, and wore a red blouse, red skirt, and red socks. I realize now that all the shades of red were slighly different. With my lipstick topping it all off, I thought I was something. I imagine that in this strip, Luann thinks she’s wrought immeasurable improvement on herself. How did Greg know?

Ask, or not to ask. That is the question.

Sorry Donny, but reading novels in a comic page is not my thing. Waaaay too many words

Miss my waistline though!

Donny, you aren’t all that. Quit lecturing. If you were so brilliant, we’d be reading your strip.

What struck me is how much the “dolled up” Luann looks like her mother (her mother of yesteryear, that is.)
Sisyphos about 12 years ago
Without the title and the names, I would not recognize these kids as Luann and Bernice (I didn’t start reading Luann until relatively recently).

Look up “rhetorical question” in the dictionary and you’ll see this cartoon.

Isn’t it fortunate that Greg Evans has the vast benefit of your expertise and erudition! I am sure he must be very grateful.

So refreshing!! The strip, that is!

I am always surprised at the talent for drawing that Greg has developed over the years. As his characters aged, they became less cartoonish.
yldonaldson about 12 years ago
Ah, even cartoon characters go through those awkward years. Good thing she grew out of it. She and Bernice are both lovely now.

Cute.
But I WONDER why Greg always goes back to the 80’s Vintage Strips. Why doesn’t he use the “Post Luann Make-over” Strips?
Anyone ever ask Him?

I know it’s a hair tie, but that thing in Delta’s mouth looks a lot closer to a jay, heh.

I think I juststopped reading this comic strip! It was getting more stupid anyway!
ginkens001 about 12 years ago
Just wait 24 years Luann, & you’ll be a cutie.

I feel old when 1988 is considered “vintage.” I wasn’t exactly a small child in 1988.
But I think my favorite “vintage” Luann would be the one where Gunther saves Puddles’ life and was rewarded for it by a kiss from Luann.
TELawrence about 12 years ago
Boy am I glad I overlooked this strip back in ’88. The drawing is terrible, the humor trite, and Luann is about as attractive as a new pimple.
tbritt99 about 12 years ago
The quality of the drawing has certainly improved over the years.

He DOES pretend well, though.

Oh, duh! I forgot! I had commented on the 9-18-1989 strip that I was born on that day! :) Guess Leviticus isn’t psychic after all!

Luann may not have gotten more popular but I think she’s beautiful and has a great figure now. [For a comic strip babe.]

Wow! WIsh I was able to real Luann back then. Love Luann and Bernice together; they work well together
cdemattos about 12 years ago
I could still dunk. Now I can only dunk doughnuts. As Archie and Edith crowed, “Those were the days!”
