What’s wrong with kids these days is that they have bad parents.

When I was a kid and misbehaved my dad would say “go to your room, take off your belt and wait for me”. After I was in my room he would sit down with mom and have a cup of coffee and they would laugh about how I was sweating bullets waiting to be punished. I got my whipping, learned my lesson and grew up to be a reasonably good man.

Absolutely! None of my children have ever be subjected to corporal punishment and they are great kids. They are well behaved and considerate of others.

Thank you, Nosirrom and Night-Gaunt49. It’s good to see that more people know that hitting is abuse, not discipline.

If you told the same people that from now on, their employer will be allowed to spank them whenever they make mistakes of any kind, they would scream abuse.

My Bible says in Prov. 13:24 “Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.”. I take this to mean that parents must teach a child there will be always be repercussions for bad decisions. The lady above has removed all threat of discipline, so it’s gonna be the rest of us as a society that will have to pay for his education during his term of incarceration. That of course assumes his not winding up face-down in a pool of his own blood back in the alley. I rarely spanked my kids, but I never let them think it was not an option.

There are ways of discipline without hitting them. What is being shown here obviously is not.

I agree. That’s no way of disciplining a garden gnome.

In this case the mom needs to give a good swat to son’s bottom will not hurt. Then demonstrate to child with his own toy of hitting a hard surface the damage he caused by destroying his own favorite toy.

Most of the time when you use corporal punishment it is because you are mad at your kid for something they have done. When you’re mad it is too easy to cross the line from a quick swat on the rear to abuse. I know I’ve lived it!!!! And yet they still quote the bible. Just because something is traditional DOES NOT MAKE IT RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And in today’s cartoon on creators.com, Grandpa’s friend seems to ignore him just as ‘Marshall’ ignores his mother. But on creators.com, Ruthie makes it up to her Grandpa…

I’ve been around a lot of bratty kids who have never heard the word NO. Very unpleasant to be around.

If children are given just a mild spanking when they do things that endanger themselves (and are taught to respect their parents) they have a chance to grow up as decent people. There are too few nowadays who respect anyone else’s rights or property, much less have the values of my generation (pride of workmanship and a sense of justice).

My own 4 children very seldom had any corporal punishment (and never any that was severe) but I appreciated that I could count on their respect as they were all much taller and stronger than I before they left the familial dwelling (but I’m only 5’-0").

Basically at that child’s age, a sensible mom would pay the damage and immediately leave, telling said BRAT that he will not be going anywhere again with her until he can behave appropriately.

My children could be counted on to behave themselves even in a fairly nice restaurant (though I would not pick one with slow service – children have a slow attention span) and we always ordered something for them that could be brought to the table right away (even if just the rolls and butter).

You shouldn’t have to punish your kids, but you can say no without them getting upset. When I was a kid I had trouble asking for things, not much opportunity for no.
