OK, so is the joke “Nobody ever paid me for my work before, but I kept doing it anyway” or is it “I never thought anyone would ever actually pay me money for my work”? Neither interpretation is particularly logical, but what else could he even mean here?

    Where’s Crankshaft?

Once again, Thomas reaches to the tabula rasa of the human psyche, touching all of humanity in a way that everyone can relate to on a deep and personal level. For, inside, are we not ALL

…100 years old and wanting royalty checks for comical books? Flash: “FIRST SMIRK’S ON ME, BOYS!”

Phil Holt: “Christ, I’m right here! And DEAD! And you ignore me?!”

(Doesn’t this heavily imply that the royalty check is just for the one book Jeff bought? Meaning, he’s never seen a PENNY from the multi-billion grossing Slopbucket Jones movies?)

Hey, where’s Mental Midget? If Jff’s inner child isn’t there, does it mean Jff is hallucinating this whole scene?

Considering how long it took Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster to be recognized and compensated for being the creators of “Superman,” this little comic strip makes a point …

Royalties for comic book work are a recent development. I think it all started when the Siegel and Shuster families sued DC Comics.

Still better than then other forms of entertainment where the bean counters use funny math to make sure the studio gets theirs first and foremost.

    No royalty check?

That’s what he gets — or doesn’t get — for working in a country which has no monarchy.

Just to beat this dead horse a little further: do newspaper reporters get per-copy royalties for their stories? Because Google sucks, I cannot tell how much the Washington Post’s circulation went up during the Watergate scandal, but I recall (having been around at the time) it increased quite a bit. Did Woodward and Bernstein get a royalty based on that boost? Far as I can tell, no.

Gotta show this strip to my wife. She self-published her first novel last year, and she’ll be able to relate.
