Guy Wyre is on the line (not on the wyre) and he doesn’t know where he is, but he’s been taken somewhere. There wouldn’t be any point in Howdy introducing himself anyway. It would probably be like an Abbott and Costello routine:
Well, I was wrong. Howdy got balls; to walk through a hotel lobby with a man in front of his gun. I just bet there were no night owl guests in conspicuous areas to spot this odd late night odd couple. If there are other entrances I would surmise they require a card to access the locked doors.
I went back to re-read the July 20 strip blunebottle linked to, and then came forward day by day until I got to today. I must say, for those who have been saying that the story is dragging, when you read it as a collection, it really does move right along. Tracy and Dethany visit the warehouse and are stonewalled by Coney, Coney goes to see Wilson about the contested ownership, Tracy and Dethany drop in on Wilson right after that, meanwhile we see Howdy researching background on Dethany, then we see Dethany rousted from sleep to be confronted with this crisis. All that took place in 15 days. That really is about the same pace as a Chester Gould story. I read most of Dick Tracy in reprint collections, rather than day-by-day, so maybe it’s not a fair comparison, but as a collection, this story really is working so far.
Where’s Tracy? Wouldn’t they have kept someone watching her, given all their suspicions about Coney, the SlumLord and all their gang? Did Howdy get in too easily?
Let me understand. Howdy went to Fastrackville and kidnapped Guy. Now all of a sudden he’s back in Tracytown (with or without Guy) and it’s the same night? Huh?
Wouldn’t it have been easier for Howdy to simply call Dethany and have Guy do the old “they kidnapped me” bit? It’s not like she wouldn’t recognize his voice. It would certainly make more sense than what we’ve gotten…Howdy apparently teleporting to Tracyville to show off his new smartphone. Oh, and to reveal himself as the kidnapper (as I’m sure the hotel has security cameras). Man, Coney and his crew really are incredibly stupid villains.
1-HOWDY DOOGIE: Wanna play Hotel Peephole? DETH WARMEDOVER: Huh?2- HOWDY: It’s a guessing game. Round One, I try to guess what you’re wearing and you try to guess what I’m wearing on my side of the door. I guess that you’re in your jammies.
DETH: Yeah, well that’s easy. It’s frickin’ 3 a.m. I guess you got no pants on.
3-HOWDY: You’re good. Ok we’re tied. You’re up, Guy.
GUY PRONOUCED GEE: No, you are, you per-pert! Ok. I guess that your jar of ze cold cream exploded all over your body. DETH: WRONG! I’m up one point. I guess that you’re not from around here.
GUY: How-dee! I need a ruling, silvous plais! I think she must be more specific! HOWDY: I agree.
DETH: Ummm, Canada? GUY: CURSE YOU! Point to you, you hor-eee-ble person! How deed you know? Was it my unrelenting niceness?
DETH: No, I can see a little bit of the Canadian Tuxedo you’re wearing. Nobody else in the world wears jean pants and jackets.
GUY: CURSE YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR OBSERVATIONAL POW-ERS! Your turn, How-dee. HOWDY: Not cold cream, eh? I guess you went swimming in the polluted and toxic Tracy River in spite of the warning signs. DETH: POINT, ME! HOWDY: Damn. Next room, Guy…
I sure wish they could run a Dick Tracy “vintage” strip from the 1940-50’s. Something similar as they do w/ Nancy. Then both “camps” would be appeased. This new strip just doesn’t reflect Dick Tracy for me.
I don’t understand Howdy’s plan. He first was shooting at her but now he has kidnapped her boyfriend and is trying what? to extort her into dropping FasTrack’s claim on the building? She doesn’t have the authority to stop the claim.
This is a corporate purchase. Coney’s argument is with the corporation not an assistant who really has no authority over the corporation’s decisions.
Howdy seems like the only one who has committed a crime. Coney’s situation is a legal one that needs to be sorted out by lawyers not Howdy’s strong arm tactics. I thought Shaky was a stupid villain but these guys take the cake.
Where are the flying trash cans, walkie talkie wrist watches? Where is B B eyes, flat top, and prune face? Instead of copying characters from other comics, it would be nice to see some originality, new crooks, new gizmos, less drama and more action.
I’ve got to admit, the logic (?) of today’s strip is not so clear. Howdy most likely found out where Dethany is staying from Guy; if not, then, whence? Someone must be holding Guy captive on Howdy’s behalf, or else how would Guy be on the phone with Howdy and phone-camera seeing Dethany? Who’s holding Guy; pseudo-Shaggy? If Guy knows where Dethany is staying, why is he asking where’s this place unless he is referring to where he is being held?
Most peepholes I am familiar with, from hotels I’ve stayed in and from my own, have some kind of lens for a wide-angle view from within to the exterior; they are not meant for viewing into the interior, so I’m not sure what, if anything, Howdy should be able to see in panel 1, though in the strip he sees Dethany, at least partially. In any case, what does he want Guy to say to Dethany that would actually achieve anything?!

I called it… Howdy brought Guy to Dethany’s hotel room and probably has a gun at his back…
And she will open her door and get captured by Howdy and both get brought to Coney…

Dethany should have been able to recognise Howdy, as he was the one who answered the door at the warehouse when she went there with Tracy:

That’s a lot of driving, since Dethany is in Tracyville to ovrsee Fast Track’s new expansion.
