This above strip was first published in 2002, 22 years ago. That would make Joanie 88 years old in 2024. Apparently, the characters in Doonesbury don’t age quite as quickly as some might suppose.
Down or Up, it means nothing till you cash in. In 2002 the Dow went from 10K to 8K roughly and now it is 43K. So who panic sold in 2002!? I bought more, myself, I love a sale.
I had a friend who had an IRA before the last recession in 07-09. He began to panic as the amount of his money in his account began to evaporate. In a panic and against his financial advisors advice, he withdrew what remained of his retirement nestegg and took a whopping tax hit which further dwindled the remaining amount. When he asked his advisor why he kept discouraging this action, he was told the market was going to bounce back at some point. My friend told me his advisor stated if his nestegg zeroed out before the bounce back, that my friend should have been more aggressive with his deposits. Then my friend’s house went under during the bank bailouts. It came as no shock that he became a Trump supporter.
I married a woman 24 years older than I. It was a rough ride but no rougher than with younger women. She was a college girl of 65 when I met her and became a Marriage and Family Therapist at the age of 72. She’s gone now but whenever I think I’m too old to strive, her memory motivates me.
Ah, I remember this one, friggin hilarious, just another 7 years Joanie and you’ll really have something to squawk about. You’re in the period that would be referred to as the jobless or sometimes loveless recovery. People at this point are just starting to get a good feel for the mediocrity of the 401K idea. The market always goes bad periodically, that’s the nature of investing, the real nastiness of the the 2000’s leading up to end of 2008 & 2009 was that there was less upside in general depending on the quality of investments offered by your company 401K. Luck of the draw I’m afraid. Oh well,
The first few years of Dubya’s presidency were rough on the Dow with the Dow falling 7.1 percent in 2001 and falling 16.8 percent in 2002. It recovered after that, but itching for a grand finale Dubya closed with a 33.8 percent drop in 2008.

He should have said something supportive to cheer her up, like “You don’t look a day over 59”.
