Yep – she packed too early. Eventually, all boxes will be opened and repacked when the time comes to actually move. As the main packer in all the years we moved across the states, I don’t start packing until the UHaul arrived. Usually, we have the truck for 5 to 7 days, so the first day, I packed all the boxes and labeled them, starting with kitchen stuff because we planned on eating with paperware and plasticware. Packed the games, toys, decluttered stuff into trash bags that went to Goodwill. By the second day, the truck is mostly packed with furniture loaded first. The third day, we load the last of boxes that we used the last and started driving to our new home for the next 2 – 3 days. Then, unload into the new home on the 4th day, all boxes into the assigned rooms before the furniture came out, bedroom first, living room last, perhaps the next day. Then return the truck. The bedrooms took time to set up – the dimensions of the room determined the layout, putting together the beds, etc.
It looks she’s overexcited, and just wants to get it all done and moved in immediately. I understand the feeling, but you have to be able to control it.
A lot of women pack away the “stuff we never use” (tools and any of his items) but not ever the 40+ pairs of black shoes, 200 make up brushes, or the cute teacups that have never seen a drop of tea.
Always keep a toolbox handy. No matter how much packing you do, you will need a tool for something. It should be the very last thing put into the moving truck (or into your car).
She’s not moving that far away. Not everything needs to be packed in boxes! Clothes can stay on hangers and carried from one closet to another. Full drawers can go as is and placed in dressers when they’re in place. The toolbox will be placed in the car seat at the last minute and unpacked first. There’s a big difference in packing if you’re making a local move.
Phil should NOT try to repair that toaster. I took one apart many years ago. Little bits fell onto the counter in a great tinkle. I told my friend to hold the bag while I dumped the whole lot in. Never tried that again!
Rather than get ahead of themselves, the solution is to have Michael do the packing. Having the same kind of attitude he did with his half-assed job mowing the lawn, he will have everything packed for them by the third week of September.
And the first thing to be found will be a flat screwdriver! As for throwing out stuff – half the times it’s something you’ll need a week later. Also noticed that stuff you’ve been tripping over for the past several years, is nowhere to be found when needed.
I moved with a super-organized girlfriend one time. Every box was numbered, and the contents of each and every item in each box was alphabetically listed on separate typed pages – 1 for each box.
You know what’s coming, don’t you ?
When we arrived, across the country, at our new home, she discovered that she’d forgotten her lists – which, of course, somehow, was my fault !
As I’ve gotten older, one of the things I’ve learned never use simple labels on stuff packed in boxes, like “Kitchen”, “Misc”. Always include a list of everything that went into the box. Saves a lot of time and frustration later on making it well worth the initial effort.
By things they never use, she meant things SHE never uses. Just as she was throwing out only his stuff as junk, she only considers his things as ’never used".

Very relateable. I’m surprised she hasn’t packed the toaster yet.

Phil rests his case (the “namesake” screwdriver must be in the miscellaneous box)

Some people who lack the experience don’t see tools as essentials, because they can always call for someone to fix things.
