I had a friend in high school she was also kicked out of her house by her parents. Her boyfriend’s parents took her in, while her boyfriend was in the Navy. They married and lived, Happily Ever After.
Yeah, gord! So proud of him. I don’t think Brian’s being a jerk, these guys are what, 18? 19? All I see is a dude just making sure his friend is making the right decision, even if he uses some poor word choices. This strip is sweet :)
I’ve always loved the story arc of Gordon and Tracy. They are some of my most favorite characters in the strip, especially Gordon. Some of the best people come out of the worst situations and he is one of them.
I think there’s a strip missing—Gordon announced his engagement by making a joke about how he and Tracey will have an “unlimited partnership—we’re getting married!”
Well, I would have chosen a better word than “security” for a man’s reason for marrying. Would a bride-to-be want to be referred to as “security?” I think not – historically, that has been a woman’s reason to marry. Just my opinion, of course.
This marriage of Gord and Tracey will prove that these two will be partners – which is what marriage should be. They both know what they will each do in this marriage (besides kids, I mean) and that’s half the battle right there!
I remember being that age, you start to realize you’re getting older and some of your peers might be getting married/having kids soon. So maybe Brian’s realizing that a bit? Hence the surprise. These days people that age just look like kids to me, though. Besides, he could always go adventuring with Tracey. Having your spouse be your friend is important. Anyway, Gordo’s a good dude. He might be in a role that some people whose minds never left the 50s consider “traditional”, but then you remember he’s got a gay friend and his father’s abuse was portrayed as bad, not how things should be. If more people in the 50’s had his mindset, we’d probably have a more progressive world.
I’m sorry, what happened to the strip where Gordon announced he & Tracey were getting married? Y’know, the one where he called it an ‘unlimited partnership’?
Burt Reynolds was one of th ose guys who t hought getting married and “losing your freedom” was the same thing. It cost him Dinah Shore and Sally Field, and he wrote in his memoirs that he was a real jerk for it.

Gordon sure has matured quickly. Guess getting away from his alcoholic, abusive parents was an excellent incentive.

Sometimes, a bad situation at home makes a person mature quickly. That seems to be the case here…

I’ve always had “security” without being “tied down”. It’s called freedom and single for life.

Gordon is an adult, Brian is still a child.

Thank God for a artist that depicts a REAL man who recognizes the value of Marriage and the complementary role of men and women in each other’s lives.
IF only more modern comic artists would support the traditional family and not push their anti-family agendas.

Brian, it’s not just any woman who would go in on this kind of thing – why wouldn’t Gordon put a ring on it, as the song goes?

These strips now and then were the thing I liked about From For Better or For Worse. Good decisions by the young characters.

That’s Brian?? I thought that was Rhetta. I can’t even tell who’s what in the comic strips anymore.

Either this is Brian doing karaoke to Creedence Clearwater Revival or trying to get Rhetta’s brother to eat liver & onions:
Lorne,
Lorne,
Lorne down the liver!
