No credit for Elly on the cooking. On the other hand, that’s a lot of steak for one grill, plus those steaks look pretty blackened and burnt. I would not want to eat a steak that looks like that. I am not sure Elly would want credit for this.

Notice that of all things people are eating in the second-to-last panel, no one has a piece of steak on their fork. Elly, herself, is drinking her barbecue wine and not touching the steak. If the cook won’t eat it, you know it’s bad.

The guy in the last panel who compliments John, when he is eating in the second-to-last panel, is chewing so hard that his moustache has started to slide off his face. That’s one tough steak. Notice he does not actually say that the food tasted good. He says, “Nobody cooks up a better barbecue than you!” That sounds like a backhanded compliment to me.

We have no idea if the steaks are overdone or if the colorist goofed.

WAITER: And how did you find your steak, sir?

Did she cook them in the oven first before placing them on the grill?

LOL for mothers day my loving husband offered to uncover and lite the grill that has an electric start button. He would put some steaks on if I would “Monitor” them. He meant I should cook OUR steaks for mothers day. Nice.

So typical. Even if the husband actually does all the work for the barbecue part, the wife fixes all the side dishes, sets the table, brings everything out (including the meat to grill) and does most if not all of the cleanup and the husband gets all the credit!

The thing is Elle: Everyone is so busy talking and drinking they don’t notice all that you are doing ‘behind the scenes’ ! ! ! !

Nobody has remarked on this yet. The Pattersons have invited some half a dozen neighbors or friends over for a Sunday afternoon barbecue, but where are their 3 children, Michael, Lizabeth and April? Weren’t the kids invited?

No self-respecting griller would dare leave the grill unattended. John obviously does not take any pride in his grilling skills. Sad sad sad. :(

They all sound like a group of cattle at the feeding trough in the ninth panel. Wonder if the cattle though nobody served up a better batch of silage than my FIL.

I love sirloin with kosher salt on each side and each side in frying pan, black when done – fabulous – of course I can eat meat rarely living with a vegetarian.

Beautiful irony in this strip! If John stayed with his guests, the steaks would be burnt to a crisp – and Elly, most likely, would’ve got blamed for some of the damage (by not reminding John!)

She’s disappointed in the fact that John has gotten a compliment, however, how would she have reacted if she heard “Wow, John…these steaks were a little tough, it looks like you’ve lost your touch”? I’m betting she would have been disappointed with this too!

sigh, us southerners always have to remind people the difference between BBQ and grilling. BBQ is cooked low and slow. Grilling is for that nice fast sear on a good steak.

When my parents had summer cookouts at the family home in the suburbs, my father was in charge of grilling the chicken breasts, which he basted with a butter and garlic sauce. My mother made a great potato salad to go with the chicken. My favorite photo of my dad shows him behind the barbeque tending carefully to the piece-de-resistance of the summer feast.

In the first panel it looks as if everyone is talking at the same time. What’s going on here? Isn’t this in Canada? I thought only Americans did that.
