According to Google: To ‘march to the beat of a different drummer’ means to act independently and to behave differently than what is expected or is the norm. Someone who “marches to his own beat” is a person who is not constrained by social norms or rules.
Keep in mind that the first thing is an exercise….at 1:18 he’s hanging with the line on show music…and the corps went undefeated that year (2nd of 2 back to back undefeateds).
He was 12 here…joined the corps 4 years later and aged-out last season with 3 world championships, among other honors.
I see a lot of comments about certain drummers, Moon, Bonham, Krupa, Morello. Yeah they’re cool, but seeing who Caufield is I think he might go toward a Max Roach, or Jimmy Cobb, or Elvin Hayes, or Roy Haynes. They have something in common with Caufield that the aforementioned group does not have.
Jef Mallett’s blog Posts · Frazz 14 hrs · Honestly, my favorite kind of drumming is the kind that you don’t notice until it stops. Makes sense, right? I’m a cartoonist; empty spaces matter a lot. But my other favorite kind is the kind where you can hardly notice anything else. Because I’m a writer, too, and the kind that can go on and on.But I can’t do anything like Neil Peart played drums.
mddshubby2005 I had a black and white cat with a black heart-shaped nose like the one you use for your photo. His name was Indy and he was left in a tree next to our house the night of July 4 as a little kitten. We had him around 15 years. Very loving cat.
Pretty Ironic that the cartoonist’s name is Mallett (see: Evelyn Glennie and Gary Burton)…but doesn’t anyone on this string know any REAL drummers like: Steve Smith, Steve Gadd, JoJo Meyers, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Drum Corps International, etc…you guys have been living under the rock “drummer” rock (get it?) too long….I used to teach 4th and 5th graders to play better than 99.9 per cent of “rock drummers”, which BTW is an oxymoron! Phil Collins and Pert and VERY FEW others are the exceptions….see the two volume video set of the Tribute to Buddy Rich…..real drummers! Go to youtube and look up the guys I listed…if ya don’t get it then, then there’s no hope :-(

Who’s the original drummer that the others are all different from, then? Gene Krupa? Or an ancient caveman ancestor of Ringo Starr?

Yes, Morello. He’s the one most given to unusual time signatures that would be hard to march to.

Back when, Buddy Rich did an album with Max Roach (Rich vs Roach, 1959) Hard to do better than that.

I have the well played CD of Ian Hunter “Shades of…”. The rhythm beat of the song Bastard makes me think of peg leg sailors marching.
