The old sage is right, bees are perfect just the way they are. They pollinate flowers and get food in return. I wonder what our reality would be like if every effort we put into feeding ourselves was good overall for the biosphere?
I have a blue chiffon bush in my yard which is blooming so well and bees are all over it (which I am happy about). Every day or two I pluck the old dried out blooms from it and the bees never bother me. It’s almost like we have an understanding.
The last time a bee stung me was 1978 or 9 and it was an accident. The bee and I collided. I was riding my bicycle and it was flying low. No one was at fault, but the bee suffered. I got the stinger out without it injecting venom.
There actually are stingless bees, and they are very important pollinators. They don’t make honey, though, so unless you own a farm, you probably won’t know about them at all, much less care about them.

Because engineering the bees is a HELL of a lot easier than teaching people not to be idiots.

Mrs. Olsen is in the teaching biz after all. Though I do wonder how she’d address the current anti/non-vax folks…

Do people bother bees? I’ve avoided bees my entire life.

Take away the bee’s defense, you should be responsible for defending the bee.

I could wax eloquent in defense of the bees, but it’s none of my beeswax.

How would Mrs. Olsen address the anti-vax/non-vax folk?

Bees, cicadas, crickets, birds – the ever shrinking chorus that makes for pleasant evenings on the deck. Enjoy them while we can.

She’d have better luck teaching bees to not sting humans.

Never found bees to be a problem. Now hornets, yellow jackets, wasps, different story.

To address Concretionist’s concern, instead of stingless bees, how about bees that inject vaccine?
Nighthawks Premium Member over 3 years ago
sure. that’ll work. just as well as telling people who throw their trash out the car window to stop doing that

How about genetically engineer humans who realize, as my Dad used to say, you play with the bull you get the horns.
And don’t whine about the consequences!

We can’t even teach people to not bother bears.

Oddly, the people that bother bees the most are the same ones that raise them. Then they still their honey. Most of the rest of us are accomplices.

There are a few natural bee species that are stingless. It’s evolution kid.
