It divided us into the won’ts and the wills. According to reports, membership in one group shrinks daily, yet new recruits turn up in batches. Strange world.
So, why not require gloves? After all people touch all kind of things and sanitizer wears off and only kills some. Why not prevent anyone with a band aid? There is still risk for blood borne pathogens. The issue with shoes isn’t particularly about sanitation. It is about OSHA.
I think it’s a liability issue. Not for the unshod, but for the management, which is held to be legally responsible for any mishap no matter how much blame the sufferer deserves, or how little blame is really the fault of management.
Bare feet are (mostly) prohibited due to safety. Proprietors and their insurance companies don’t want to make payouts to people injured by stepping on broken glass or other hazards.
A quick search on Google (which neither the kid nor the cartoonist bothered to do) shows that the No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service signs started because some businesses didn’t want hippies in their stores. That’s it. Nothing to do with safety or sanitation.
Posting a sign protects the store from idiots who come in barefoot, step on something that causes an injury (there’s no way to find every single shard of that broken glass from the dropped jelly jar) and wants to sue the store.
they should supply coverings for them, like they do in surgical or quarantine situations so they don’t bring in all the germs they have picked up while being worn.

Polynesians historically greeted each other by touching noses. Westerners found that disgusting because we consider the nose to be unclean.
But the Polynesians saw it the other way. They considered the mouth to be the one that’s unclean.

Give global warming another couple of decades, and clothing in general will be universally viewed as superfluous.
