Substitute the word experienced for career and it’s in the bullseye. Socrates was one of best at ‘teaching’ his students to reason out a sensible solution to their own questions. Great teachers follow that model whether or not they actually realize it as it happens.
A teacher is charged with the enlightenment of rooms full of multi-variable intellects, One can never say for sure which or if any student gets it. But a teacher must, at the end of the day. believe that at least one student has benefited from that day’s effort. On such slim reeds is one’s career delicately balanced. To think otherwise is to say one has failed.
It’s unfortunate that to some, the word “career” when associated with teacher has come to have a pejorative sense. My wife was a “career” teacher, she gave it all she had and it took a strip off her.
We constantly pursue “stuff.” We are sold stuff on an incessant basis, by people who insist that their stuff will improve your life. Bring you happiness. Make things better. Put a smile back on your face.
Then you have a child, and realize that stuff isn’t as important as love, family, or friends.
This feeling lasts for about 4 years, until the child… starts demanding stuff.

I think that Mallett uses “Career teacher” to mean someone who has given up the CALLING of teaching but continues to pull down the paycheck.

I don’t think THAT is at all what Mallett means. I somehow doubt

And if it gets Mrs Olsen’s garage cleaned out too, then it’s doubly worth it.

Cleaning out two garages should certainly give Caulfield lessons in organization.

The puppy is a Boston Terrier. Let’s call him “Boots” for his white paws.

First I thought a career teacher was a teacher on the subject of careers.
