If you could read insect, you wouldn’t have any questions as to the purpose of the stabilimentum. They are all variations on the same theme, advertisements for popular amenities such as free wi-fi, free coffee refills, coin-less laundry room and the like. Recently, there has been some question about the ethics of making spider web locations gyms in the popular PokeBug Go! smartphone app.
And I’ve read Stabilimena for Dummies. The author presumes much, going on about design and placement, without ever actually instructing one as to how one is to produce silk or attach it to begin with. Apparently, some of us are too ignorant on the topic to even classify as Dummies.
The spider tries to deceive in a tangled web he weaved, hardly hidden from the elements, and known throughout the settlement. The camouflage is of different sorts, and the spider, must be a quick slider. When the fly comes to his web,he may pass it by, although the spider lies, and the fly gets caught in the tangled web, in which he is led.
There was a banded garden spider outside my window for several weeks, weaving the Z patterns. Beautiful! One day, she left. Don’t know why. She never did explain why she did it or how she learned. I have a picture somewhere…
When I walk into a spider’s web, I shriek like Dr Smith on “Lost In Space”! I have arachnophobia at times. And this coming from someone who used to be a bounty hunter! Sorry, there’s a broken link, and I had to cut and paste your name to reply. Does this happen all the time on this site?
A theory is supported by some research, to the point where it can be said to have independent merit. That is not the same as being proven. Sometimes, the research is even tainted, directed or purely statistical correlation, which cannot be considered proof at all.One may hypothesize that birds make the sun rise, and form a theory based on the observation of the sun rising shortly after the birds begin to sing. Proof is another matter entirely, as every theory is unproven, thus making it a theory only and not a practical reality defined by reproducible experimental evidence or observation that is stringently tested against all known laws and against all imaginable contrary contingencies. In depth study will reveal that the Sun actually rises without regard to bird song, and that bird song is actually caused by the approach of the dawn. A hypothesis is pure speculation. A theory is speculation that has been investigated and supported by observations, but is not proven to be a law of nature. Thus, it remains theoretical.Gravity is a law. How gravity works is theoretical.
Often these spiders create the web in the bottom of a whiskey bottle. Putting a sailing ship in a bottle for example. This causes different formals of creating their webs along with a few drops of liquid in the bottom of the bottle. Only to be destroyed by a wino coming along and sucking the bottle and spiders dry. A sad but true story.
There are two theories as to what stabilimentum is for.One is that it is easy for birds to see, so flow flying birds won’t fly through the webs, therefor forcing the spider to repair or replace the web. Making a web is costly in time and the proteins that a spider must use up to produce the spider silk. Also, it was discovered recently that both stabilimentum and some flowers reflect ultra-violet light. The stabilimentum may be a visual lure to insects that feed off of nectar, or in the case of bees, collect pollen.
None of my spiders go in for that decorative stuff. They tend to group near the lights that are on at night, and are usually too fat and complacent to bother with ornamentation.Of course, I’m far enough north not to have poisonous spiders, which is why I am familiar with them.I love winter. It keeps the riff-raff out.

I don’t have anything above my hub, and nothing zigzagging anywhere. I do camouflage myself occasionally, however.

Is this the part where all the Frog Applause readers stand up and say “I am Josh Lyons!”?I’ve never seen the movie, but I’ve heard of it.
