The hard part for the teacher was in knowing when enough was enough, and not getting carried away with it.

I’m old but not that old!

I went to a Lutheran school and I think several of the teachers were there because they were allowed to beat kids. One guy had a drawer full of hoses, rulers and sticks.

Not funny . . . when i read about “the good ol’ days” particularly in private/boarding schools, I often just feel sick.

My 8th grade teacher punched me in the arm when I called him the Chuck the F**k, after that I went back to my seat and shut up. Never told any administrator about it felt I deserved it. luckily he was a boxer and knew how to throw a punch

I got the strap twice, grade 2 as a (truly) innocent bystander in a group that was teasing a very buck-toothed girl. And in grade 4 as I shook a tree a fat boy was trying to climb.. and he fell out. Can’t say it did me any long lasting harm.

No it was called, ‘Getting to the seat of the problem’.

Teachers definitely knew how to make an impression on their students’…skin.

I’m 75 and don’t recall anyone getting paddled, it might have been allowed, but I don’t recall it being administered.

I remember only once seeing a kid get spanked in school. This was in a public school in California, 1960-1961 school year, in Second Grade. It was a regular old over the knee but very short duration spanking. I don’t remember what the kid actually did, probably some kind of mouthing off, but most of the class felt he deserved it. The worst punishment, at least in my mind, and probably because it was fairly common, was the dreaded having to “stay after school”!
